check your ignition fuses but i think your problem is between your module and ignition switch if you got safty switches on there any one of them can cause that also.

When I had my savage it backfired all the time. They are known for this. Make sure you fuel is not to lean. Just adjust the fuel. You should adjust that and put some sea foam in it or ethenol treatment since most of the gas is terrible these days. Running 91 octane will help. Also you will want to replace the muffler gasket too.
When you replace that it will smoke which is normal.
I sold mine but I know the bike pretty well from tearing it apart due to trying to fix it from not running properly. Let me know if you have any more issues.

Your Sporty has a fuse box somewhere. check the fuses to see if any are blown. Harley always puts their ignition systems on their own circuit. If you don't find anything that way, contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org and I'll scan a trouble shooting chart in and send it to you. There's more to the late models than there was with the early models.

With Ignition switch off :-
1st Check for bad connections, broken/crushed wires, continuity & resistance between the cap, HT lead, coil, ignition coil primary wires
2nd Disconnect the CDI unit from its connector & check for the same between the loom side of the connector back to the coil
3rd Check coil is earthed
If all OK suspect the CDI unit but double check everything first( there are some more checks as well), as these are very expensive
Please rate this solution well if it has helped !!
Any comments welcome
