Check the coil and the ignition module in the distributor as it may be a unit overheating and breaking down electrically.

you mentioned a carby replacement so did you put the heat stop gasket / block back between the carby base and the manifold . It is there to stop the heat of the engine transfering up through the manifold and into the carby causing the fuel in the bowl to boil off

SOURCE: Truck will crank and then shut off

You will need to do your testing while the vehicle is in failure to start mode.Check wether the coil is recieving 12v and pour a little fuel down carb to see if it wants to run.If pouring a little fuel down carb makes the car try to fire up you probably have a fuel pump issue. If it doesnt try to fire you have an ignition problem.Hope you get it sorted and good luck.

SOURCE: I Have a 2002 blazer that starts but motor dies, surges when accelerating

If this engine is a VORTEC then you may have a problem with the internal fuel system. Under the top plenum there is a fuel reg and poppet valves that inject fuel into the cylinders. Sometimes the tubes that run fuel from the reg to the valves can leak and cause your problem. This cannot be found with pressure check because this occurrs after the reg. PS fuel mileage will go down. Let me know if this helps.Moe

SOURCE: 94 s10 blazer dies when put into gear

Sounds like a vacuam leak, best thing to use is cold start spray, by spraying the vacuam lines with this you will notice a change in the idle wherever the leak is at.

Check to see if the radiator fan is coming on when the van gets hot.If it does not then on a 2.6 liter engine.look on the bottom part of the radiator on drivers side for a fan switch that could be bad and not letting the radiator fan to come on. On a 3.0 liter engine the coolant temperature sensor is screwed into the thermostat housing. And on a 3.3 liter and on a 3.8 liter engine the coolant temperature sensor is screwed into the front cylinder head. Anyone of these can cause the van to run hot and eventually die with no restart until the temperature has cooled down. Check the fan first with two jumper wires from the positive/negative post to the fan connector on a 2.6 liter engine (positive wire to open pin on plug, negative wire to insulated plug side. On all v6 engines hook jumper wires to motor. To the left side will be positive and negative to the right. Do not let both wires touch together while testing. If motor does not respond to direct wiring then replace it. Another thing to look at is the catalytic converter on van. Check the exhaust flow when the van is running cold and again when it gets hot. If the flow starts to slow down when the van gets hot then remove the converter(plugging up). After doing that run the van again to see if the van runs ok. Hope this will help you.

I got a 1989 dodge Dakota that I have to put cardboard in the carb to keep it running could this be a carb issue or pump issue potentially?

Insuffucient fuel delivery or fouled carburetor are possibilities but the are multiple potential causes.

Fuel pump
Fuel filter
Fuel lines/tank

Fouled carburetor and/or Vacuum leak(s)

Poor spark... plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, and/or ignition module.

Ignition timing, distributor and ignition module.

Valve timing.

Best place to start is by removing and inspecting all the plugs. Note the respective location as you remove them. They should all be uniformly good or bad. Check all plugs are properly gapped.

Sooty black is air fuel too rich. Gummy or chunk black is oil fouled (worn rings and low compression). Grey or brown is more normal. Search inet for pictures of normal vs abnormal spark plugs, plenty example out there.

Next step depends on the plug condition but likely new plugs will be needed.

You could just go ahead and try a new set of plugs, but it doesn't take long to ruin them if you don't address the root cause.

Have 99 suburban 5.7. Just had fuel pump, filter, distributor, cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires, control module and coil replaced a little over a year ago. Drove great until it just shut off recently...

You might check for a fuel shut off valve. Some vehicles have them in case of an accident, it turns off the fuel pump. Some are just a relay that can be reset.

My 1987 dodge raider is having problems starting. Sometimes it seems like the car does not have enough power from the battery. It has the 2.6 four cylinder and is also fitted with a carb. It has been...

Check your fuses. Make sure the battery is good and the battery terminals are clean and the wires have no tears. Make sure your engine is getting gas. Spray gas or engine starter in the carb. If it starts for a second, it is a fuel problem. Either fuel pump, fuel pump fuse or relay, or clogged fuel filter. If this all checks out, you need to start looking at spark plugs, wires, distributor, cap, rotor. Check your timing belt and make sure it is not broke. It could be a cam sensor or crank sensor as well.

I have a 1981 ramcharger 318 4 barrel edelbrock carb. it starts fine, drives well for about 15 min but dies. dies quicker when 4 barrels kick in. about 2 min after dying it will start up fine and do it...

Those rattly noises are detonations,  caused by a very lean mixture. All the other symptoms indicate that the fuel flow to the carb is too low. Since you have replaced the pump and the filter, the only other things left to check are the lines and the tank sump. Or you could install a much larger pump.

2001 Dodge Dakota

I'm assuming this truck has Power Steering. (my 2000 Dodge Dakota does) Because the power steering pump is causing a strain on the engine when you turn the steering wheel and it is also being strained by putting the truck in 4 wheel drive, A simple tune up might be in order. By tune up I mean spark plugs, spark plug wires, air cleaner, Distributor cap and rotor button. I would also check the timing on the engine and if possible change the fuel filter (The fuel filter is a real bear on this truck because it is in the fuel tank along with the fuel pump and sending unit)
