Float is set to far open, meaning even though the bowl fills up, the fuel is not shutting off. take the carb of and slightly bend the tab on the float so when the bowl gets full it shuts the fuel off. Whats happening now is the fuel is not shutting off when the bowls fuel and it is running out of the overflow. simple fix. good luck.

You carbs are letting the fuel into the float bowls all the time so when you have the fuel on it just runs over and leeks past the rings into the oil.
you will need to clean the carbs and may have to replace the float values and adjust the floats
hope this helps

My 99 evo blows oil out around the head on the front cyl and smoke out the exhaust

Hi, Stacey it's called "WET SUMPING" most Harley's with external oil pumps if left sitting for weeks or months will eventually let the oil tank contents drain pass the oil pump check ball and fill up the bottom end of the crankcase when the bike is started the excess oil will gush out of the breather vent and if routed to the air cleaner will also flood the filter. This messy condition will continue until the bottom end is forcibly emptied by the flywheels or manually drained if there is a plug. There are 3 options you may want to consider:
1. Drain the oil tank before storing the bike.
2. Replace check ball and resurface seat in the oil pump.
3. Install inline ball valve shut off in the feed line to the pump.

Why is my 98 1200 Harley Davidson Sportster building pressure in oil reservoir and filling up and smells a little bit like gas

Mitchel. Fuel is probably getting into your crank case/oil because of sticking floats in the carburetors. Do not run your bike in this condition, severe damage could occur to engine. If you must run to get it to a shop for carburetor check/rebuild change oil first or have bike trailered in.

Why is my 1998 1200 Harley Davidson Sportster building oil pressure up in oil tank and filling up with oil and smells somewhat like gas like the oil is not flowing

Hi, Michael and the usual suspects are:
1. Oil tank over full.
2. Feed side of the oil pump going south.
3. Breather system clogged or blocked.
4. Oil tank vent line pinched or blocked.
5. Diaphram in petcock has failed and is allowing fuel to fill up bottom end when the engine is shut off.

Can't find fuel overflow hose

Hi Randy, look for a smmal thin hose coming off of the carburetor float bowl, and the usual suspects are:
1. Damaged or restricted fuel tank venting system.
2. Loose float bowl screws.
3. Damaged float bowl o-ring.
4. Improper fuel level in float bowl.
5. Worn or dirty inlet valve or seat.
6. Damaged or leaky float assembly.
7. Particle contamination in inlet fitting cavity.
8. Ethanol sludge, dirt, rust in bottom of fuel tank
Good luck and have nice day.

try cleaning out the on-off reserve switch on tank. maybe was dirty or gummed up, pull fuel hose and see if anything comes out if not then floats in carbs maybe stuck closed keeping the needle from opening and allowing fuel into bowls

2003 Fatboy while winterizing drained the oil very little came out however there was oil in filter..New filter, filled with oil started sounds like usual then the oil shot out of the cap where you insert...

On the softail model Harley Davidson's the oil tank is external and sits up higher than the engine crank case and oil pump. when these bikes sit for an amount of time the oil gravitates from the tank to the crank case. starting may seem sightly harder and seem like the battery is going dead. the bike should be started in knowing that you had oil in it to start with and no giant leak puddle underneath of it. warm up the engine and then drain the oil out of the tank. the reason why your filler cap popped off is because you had probably 2 1/2 to 3 quarts to much engine oil in the bike. so drain the oil from the tank at the drain pug at the bottom of the hose on the high (right side ) of the bike where the swing arm meets the frame (it is a 5/8 socket) put the drain plug back in run the bike for about 5 minutes inspecting with a flashlight continuously that oil is circulating back into the tank. then dran it again and replace with new oil.

The fork oil is a very specific job needing a manual and a special tool, I don't want to insult anyones mechanical knowledge but if you have never done it before, best to take somewhere else. Engine oil on the other hand is easy, the drain tube to any softail is on the right side by where the frame meets the swing arm, has somekind of plug in it. Start and run bike for a little while, long enough to get it warm but not hot. Remove fill plug and then remove plug in drain line. Using a peice of cardboard or something put in between filter and frame , directing the oil to your drain pan instead of where ever it goes. Put 1 qt oil back in (after everything is reinstalled) start the bike and make sure the oil light goes out, when it does shut bike off and fill to the point that when it is standing upright you get a little oil on the tip of your finger, over filling may result in loss of oil cap from pressure (been there)

Changing oil on 2003 electra glide

I don't blame you for wanting to do this yourself. Be sure to use a harley filter and harley oil.

Drain the oil, replace o ring on drain plug, replace drain plug, remove oil filter, fill oil filter with 20/50 harley davidson oil and replace filter being careful not to overtighten, fill oil tank with the bike upright to the fill line on the dipstick. Take the bike for a short ride and check the fluid level while warm.
