Question about Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have a 99 sportster 883 with only a modified ignition. I think that's the only upgrade. I just bought it from a friend and he says ran fine before parking it. Been sitting for a few months. But the problem is when cruising it misfires a little bit and when you give throttle it doesn't. Also when idling it has a little pop or plop that doesn't belong. Don't know much about bikes but need to know where to start

Because of it's age and your description, one thing to check for is an intake leak (sucking air).

Erratic symptoms can be the sign of an air leak at the intake manifold or carburetor.

Finding an air leak at the manifold is simple. All you need is a can of WD-40 with the extended nozzle attached. With the engine idling, direct a spray at the manifold gasket area and base of the carburetor. When the spray hits the area leaking, there will be a distinct change in the sound of the engine. If the air leak is major, the change in sound will be quite obvious. Smaller leaks may only create minor changes in the sound.

Also check any vacuum lines (like the one going to the VOS).

Over time, the rubber seals can dry up, crack, and split, allowing air to enter the system, leaning out the mixture.

SOURCE: V65 will start and idle fine but won't take any throttle!

more than likely your cooling fans are coming on way too late and is super hard for the radiator to get rid of the heat while is @ idling.
there is a upgraded radiator switch
Honda V-65 Magna VF-1100C Fan Switch UPGRADE on Ebay
i think this will be your resolution anything else is prob going to be a head gasket.

SOURCE: 2006 HD Sportster 883 won't run on idle

your idle passages are clogged there are 3 spots to blow out or clean the idle mixture screw is located on the bottom of the carb behind the bowl remove to clean there is a holeabout 1/8" inch in the front of the carb at the bottom of the throat 2 actually i think the 1 closest to the middle of throat is the 1 you are looking for this is where it draws air to elmusify the idle mixture. spray brake clean or carb cleaner into the small hole it should spray out the idle screw mixture hole [with idle screw out of hole] if this does not clear. the 3rd spot is inside the throat of the carb on the intake side you will have to remove the carb from the engine there is 1 more spot. the idle jet located inside the bowl

If the carb is adjusted correctly, the engine will not idle without the choke when cold. I will usually take at least 3 to 5 miles of riding to get the engine warm enough to idle by itself without the choke. If your bike is a full operating temperature, it should idle at about 1000 RPM. If it's idling higher than this, you need to slow it down a bit.

Remove the air filter cover and look at the top right side of the carb. You'll see a screw there . This is the throttle stop screw. Turn the screw counterclockwise to lower the idle speed to 1000 RPM or so. Blip the throttle and let it settle back to idle. Reset it if necessary. Once set, put the air cleaner cover hand on.

The sensor plate is probably shot. If you pull the cover on the cam side look at the plate. An easy tell it's bad or going bad is the sealer is usually melted. If that's not the problem then it's the ignition module .

The battery that's in my 1993 883 Sportster is not the correct one. The terminals are not in the right place. Does any one know what the proper battery group is for this application...?

I tried the pep boys route of getting a battery...i would have had to put the acid in the battery and charge it.i wasted like $70 and couldnt use it. i went to Harley and bought their gel battery for i think around $80 , that was in feb. 2008!!though i ride my bike daily,i run 2 sets of blue l.e.d. lights and im still using the same battery. ive got over 4 years so far and it was charged and ready when i bought it!!

96 883 sportster with 3000 miles only. Will run only with enrichment knob pulled out when i throttle up it wants to die and spits fuel out carb and pre ignites in carb ran well when was stored not run...

Carbureted Harleys that will only run with the enrichment knob pulled out require a partial disassembly as the slow jet is most like clogged and/or the entire carburetor and fuel system needs to be cleaned &serviced.

Check- kill/ignition switch, spark at the plugs, voltage to starter solenoid, fuel in tank, and fuses if applicable. Last but not least the ignition module (right hand side cover).
