Hi, Tyrone it should be noted that the reasons your check engine light or CEL stays on constantly or flashes and your bike will or will not start and may turn over or not, these conditions will vary from bike to bike depending on the year, make, and model and you should always refer to your owners/service manual for proper diagnostic procedures. It should also be noted that any type of prior work done to the bike or an abnormal event occurrence IE: adding accessories, electrical curiosity or adventures, laying the bike down or crashes, rain storms or bike washings just before CEL light issues started can be significant hints or aids into tracking down the gremlin, also for 2003 and older models carry the appropriate jumper wire to access fault codes and reduce the risk of being stranded or towed also keep in mind that your CEL comes to life if anything, and I do mean anything isn't 100% with the ECM like parameter spikes. This means that you could be staring at a major repair, or your speedometer sensor is contaminated and needs to be cleaned.
And the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery check the terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary, you should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
2. Faulty charging system.
3. Faulty system sensor some models have up to 40 sensors
4. Faulty safety switches: run/off, ignition, clutch lever, neutral, side stand, tip over, fuel, and or their connections.
5. The engine got wet where it didn't like to get wet.
6. Faulty ignition circuit spark plugs, coils, cables etc.
7. Broken wire or worn insulation exposing wire to a ground situation especially inside wire harness at tight bends around fairing brackets, under dash panels, under fuel tanks over cylinder heads etc. Many harnesses are open on the ends that will allow water to enter and accumulate at v-bends.
Dielectric grease and contact cleaner are your best friends for wire/cable/harness connectors, look for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets. Run speedometer diagnostics and check for generated fault codes.

SOURCE: bike sputtering & change of exhaust may nedd re-jetting??

generally when installing after market performance exhaust, jetting the carb is necessary. until you get ahold of the previous owner and find out if the carb has been jetted, you can try and adjust the fuel air mixture screw and see if that helps. and like any engine especially bikes, it is possible to sieze the piston. it can be riden, but be careful of over heating. hope this helps...

SOURCE: 2007 honda crf 250 r hard starting when cold ,

There is a proper way to start an engine. Most bikes have four controls to assist in starting.

  • The choke, used when the engine is cold. Pull the red knob for choke.
  • The " Hot Start " Lever, used when the engine is hot. Pull the lever to lean the fuel mix when the engine has been running.
  • The de-compression lever, always used.
  • The throttle, used to prime the cylinder.
Don't kick, instead, push the kick lever downward. You will feel the back pressure as the piston is going upward on the compression stroke to the point the pressure is great enough that the kick lever "locks up". You are very close to TDC. NOW, pull in the de-compression lever. Push the kick lever a little bit more to get the piston past TDC. Now release the de-compression lever. Give the throttle a 1/4 turn then let it snap closed. A diaphragm in the carb gives a shot of gas when this is done. DO NOT do this multiple times because you will flood the engine. Leave the throttle closed when kicking. A flooded engine will often backfire. Now give a strong kick through the full sweep of the kick start lever. Quickly get your foot off the kick lever at the end of the kick to avoid any chance of "kickback" from the kick lever. This happens in the case of a misfire, aka > backfire. It can be very painful, and can even break a leg. I am serious about that. Repeat the process (but without the throttle priming), until the bike starts. Go ahead and give it another primer shot after the 5th kick attempt. A good battery, a clean spark plug, a clean carb and clean air filter will also aid in starting.

Check the valve clearances. They may have tightened up after running-in the new work.

That is a hard question to answer. A stock 1988 will not beat a 2010. If you have motor work done and suspension set up right it might run with a new one. The technology is far superior in the new bikes. A stock new motor is far more powerful than an old bike. The suspension is where you will get alot of your speed also. The new stock suspensions are darn near race ready with minimal tweeking.

hi this might help,by fitting an after market exhaust system you will probably have leaned out the fuel air ratio in the carb(less back pressure in the exhaust system)you will need to have the carb rejetted to suit the exhaust modification,if you keep running the bike as it is you will inevitably seize the motor as it is running way to lean .cheers

Exhaust comes realy orange

there is a excess build up of oil in the exhaust, remove the exhaust and pour some petrol inside the exhaust and light it, leave it for around 30 mins to let it burn away the oil. Be VERY careful when lighting as sometimes you get a little flame puff out of bith ends.
please rate this advice.
