SOURCE: My rear tail light does not work when the front

You should have two filaments in the reat taillight lamp, one for tail light and one for brake light. You are not confusing these filaments/functions are you?

What you seem to be saying to me is that you have a lamp that had no tail light filament (burned out) but does have a brake light filament still intact.

Remove the light and check it visually and/or with a contunity tester.

I hope this helps you ...

The only "mystery box" that I can think of is the turn signal cancelling unit. It controls most of the lighting on your bike. The box is about an inch and a half wide by about three inches long, little over half an inch thick.
Disconnect the plug on the end of the box and check the pins to make sure they're clean. Also check for any sign of a short between the box and the light. I've seen people buy the box, and they ain't cheap, only to find out that they had a short somewhere in the wire. If you do have a short, the only thing you'll see is that the light won't work. It will not blow a fuse or anything like that. As far as I know, there is not way to test the output unless you've got a special plug made up to do so with. If you know someone that has one, swap the box out with a known good one. Last time I bought one of these boxes, it cost $150 and that was several years ago. Good Luck.

The unit must be grounded to the bikes frame. Connect it back up to the bike this time without pinching the wires. You should have a blue wire, a violet/brown wire and a black wire if you have the three wire unit, minus the black with the two wire unit. The blue wire is for the running light, the violet/brown wire is for the turn signal and the black wire is ground. If you don't have a ground wire, the metal part of the signal light itself is the ground.

SOURCE: when i turn my 1997

According to the schematic I'm looking at, your 1997 model Sporty came with front marker lights but not rear marker lights. To make sure, take the lens off of your turn signal light in the rear. Take the bulb out. Now, does the bulb have one or two filaments? If it only has one, then you don't have marker lights.

Let me know what you find.

Hi, Steven you need a load equalizer before diagnosing any turn signal/running light/parking light issue make sure the bulb is good and the light fuse has continuity with a test light. If you have replaced you OEM lights with LED lights you are going to need a load equalizer. If no turn signals work the cause could be a faulty turn signal module or the connector going to it, look for corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets. Contact spray cleaner is great for removing corrosion. If your speedometer does not function properly it will have to be fixed first because your turn signal module gets the data from the speedometer for normal turn signal function. If your front turn signals don't work use a test light to check for power and ground at the bulb socket, then start backtracking the wiring through every wire connector to the turn signal switch/button and check for continuity, go all the way back to the fuse if necessary to find the cause of the malfunction. If your rear turn signals don't work check your rear fender wiring harness connector first for corroded, broken, loose pins/sockets, power, and a good ground, (the harness connector is usually located under the seat on the front of the rear fender) then keep tracing the wiring look for obvious harness damage caused by the rear tire. If you still can't find the malfunction backtrack from the rear fender wiring harness connector. If one side does not work you could have a faulty turn signal switch or module check for continuity. Keep blowing fuse for running lights on trunk, fender marker lights, tail light and front turn signal running lights. can't find bare wire anywhere.

Not necessarily a bare wire. Could just be a slight broken spot in the insulation. Check the wiring inside the rear fender. Sometimes the tire gets into the wiring harness and chews things up a bit. This usually happens on lowered bikes.

2005 harley fxdwg brake light works, tail light does not. replaced bulb, replaced tail light cover ?

The brake and running lights should run on separate wires from under the seat, through the hole in the rear fender and into a connector on the rear tail light cover. Your turn signal wires run the same path. These should all be clipped into place under the fender. I would look for a broken wire under the fender, especially at the point of the clip, or a corroded terminal in the tail light housing. The open wires are suseptable to rear wheel thrown road debris. You have easy access for a wire continuity test from the plug under the seat to the tail light cover.

My tail lights are out on my 2008 HD Softail Night Train. The blinkers work. The front lights all work. The brake lights work. Its just both the rear tail lights are out. What should i do?

Hi Collegekid62, always check the bulbs first for broken filaments. Then check the connection at the rear fender wiring harness, inspect for corroded, broken or loose pins. Use a dab of dielectric grease and repair as necessary. Check your brake relay if you have one , some models rear turn signals were single filament bulbs only, no running light. My 2003 Pontiac Vibe tail lights do not work. The brake lights work. I checked the tail fuse. Turn signals work also. Why no tail lights?

Your turn signal lights and brake lights are the same lights . Question : do the front parking lights work ? The front and rear running lights or parking lights are all on the same circuit and fuse . If the front lights work , and the rear lights don't , make sure the bulbs are good first . If OK , I would suspect the problem is either a bad ground in the rear taillight wiring harness or a bad connection in the rear taillight connector Itself .

The tail light and brake light don't work. the bulb looks fine and the tour pack light lights and turn signal lights work.

The wiring sub-harness for the tail light assembly could have come unplugged, It usually plugs into the main harness under the seat or down beside the forward part of the rear fender. Also the wires could have been damaged under the fender back behind the tail light assembly.
