Why does my 98 dodge caravan have trouble climbing hills?

98 dodge caravan runs just fine but seems to have a lot of trouble when climbing hills. I have to completely floor it to keep my speed up. I also noticed that the cruise control can't keep up with the set speed when climbing hills either. Even on cruise control I lose 5 -10 mph. Is this a transmission problem?

A transmission issue would give vibration tremendously during uphill. If you're not getting the vibration, or burning smell of transmission fluid, suspect clogged catalytic converters.

This could be a catalytic convertor problem if the cat is plugged or getting plugged you will cause major power issues ....is there a check engine light? also the is there a good flow of exhaust exiting the tail pipe , and does it feel extremely hot exiting the tail pipe

I have a 2002 au falcon v8 ute ,automatic. And it seems to surge when i am driving up hills under acceleration?Other than that it runs beautifully.Any idea what it could be?

Depending on the slope of the hill, it could be kicking in and out of overdrive. This is normal to a point. I would take it out of OD if there were a lot of hills to climb. Better for the transmsission.

1998 Dodge 3.3ltr grand caravan overheats.I have repaced water pump,Thermostat,Had cracked head and replaced both of them with new ones,Replaces fans, replaced fan relay,All hoses,Radiator. When i start...

You would need to figure out if it is a cooling problem or something producing extra heat in the engine.
Is the radiator fan pulling enough air thru the condenser and radiator ?
Is the fan coming on and also when the ac is on and when the engine reaches 220 degrees ?
Is it possible the exhaust has a restriction somewhere ?

1989 dodge ram 50 cuts out while climbing hills. does it worst in high gear.

I would have the truck put on computer, you did not clarify if any codes, however, i believe your trouble area first to check or have checked is in your 02 sensor. It seems like it could be starving for air. As long as you feel your fuel filter is clean and not partially clogged, I would look toward the 02 sensor. Thanks Mike

My 1993 Safari Van is having trouble climbing hills. It seems to run well when on flat surface but all of a sudden it has had trouble going past miles per hour on the interstate and slows when I go up...

Sounds like a weak fuel pump. You will need to put an inline fuel gauge to check if you have good fuel pressure, if it's over 10 lbs, you have another problem, like a clogged fuel filter. You can find an inline fuel gauge at Kragen or Pep Boys.

What causes a 1998 grand caravan 3.3 liter to lose speed climbing a hill with the cruise set but it will hold the vehicle back going down a hill

you have higher torque need when pulling the vehicle up hill but less going down because it does not require as much power to hold your van back. Hope this helps
