Hi, Anonymous before testing any electrical component in the Starting System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand, clutch, neutral safety switch.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid, starter have failed or circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
14. Check for engine trouble codes.

SOURCE: 1986 Honda Shadow vt1100 does not start.

Try to jump start the bike, 2nd gear down hill key on and let the clutch out... If it starts you have a starter problem, could be the brushes.. good luck...

How or where do I unplug and then remove the rear turn signal from an '03 Fatboy?

The wire connection should plug into the taillight. Remove the lens and you will see what I'm talking about. You will need to remove the black connector after you unplug it and probably cut the silver plug off to get the wire through the standoff. If you're good at soldering, just cut wires about 2 inches from the black connector and solder them back together and coverr the splice with heat shrink when finished. Good luck!

Error code 40, found problem, still wont start

you can disconnect the battery to clear the codes. If I remember correctly the code 40 is indicating an open injector circuit. You might want to check that area as well as the service manual for more detail

change your plug wires, if that doesnt take care of it a coil would be next. if you have a crack it would obviously be a problem with water and then forcing it in with air. An old trick is to spray the coil with wd40 to disperse water-the wires too. But i dont know if you want to do that to a chrome road locomotive. If did you would know what it is for sure though.

If it had correct RPM response before it had to be something they did. If new plugs, check Spark gap on plugs. Faulty or improper spark plugs, or damaged plug wires.

At idle left cyl misfires. Remove right plug wire at idle and bike dies. hold idle up and remove right plug wire and bike stays running. runs good on the road as long as you are in 2nd gear. Has good fire...

The two carbs are not balanced to each other. Balance as follows; Start the bike then increase the idle on the left carb to a high idle. Now unplug the right cylinder and the engine will slow down some. Now slowly turn the idle down on the left carb until the engine just dies. Hook up the right plug wire then do the same proceedure for the right carb. Now both carbs are balanced. Hook up the left wire and start the engine again. The bike will be running faster than you want so now adjust the idle screws on both carbs equally to get the desired idle speed. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

I just bought a 2002 Road and the Oil Light turns on before I start it. How do I add oil?

The oil light is supposed to turn on before you start the engine because since the engine is not running, there is no oil pressure. That is what this light is telling you, no oil pressure. To check and add oil, look down on the right side of the bike where the engine and transmission meet. There is a large chrome oil tank plug with a knurled edge. With the bike on the side stand, put the plug out along with the long dipstick. There are two marks on the stick, full cold, and full hot. Add oil where the plug came out, do not overfill.

Motorbike sitting in shed unused for a year. Chrome has little rust spots all over. How may I get the rust spots off without damaging the chrome? I live within about one kilometre of the ocean and at times...

you'll need some steel wool, use fine if the rust is not bad. No need to scratch the metal too hard for nothing.
Second you'll need some metal polish to lubricate, and polish while you rub with the steel wool. Liquid polish works better..
you'll need a clean rag to buff out everything after you've removed the rust.

Rub the metal-polish-loaded steel wool on the part until you see the brown rust pits vanish. Don't do a circular motion, go in a back-and-forth motion instead to match the length of the part. Circular scratches will show even if they are very small.
Once you've made all the rusty spots go away, take your polishing rag, a clean cotton t-shirt can do the job, and buff the piece until you are happy with the result.
You can always finish with a regular application of metal polish without the steel wool after you're done.

Easy 1 min job but an hr taking chrome off. Here is the readers digest version. Start with the headlight off first screw under light on chrome trim. then pry it off. unfasten the screws holding light on about 7 screws, then unplug light. their is a chrome piece on the top of light chrome has a nut holding it on take nut off then lift that piece off. pop the piece of plastic off the key hole it prys off two screws under it remove them. that piece of chrom has a screw in it in front of handlebars you uncovered it when you took that chrome cover piece off. JUST loosen it. Now im sure you took off your windshield before you started so now remove your bolts that hold on the quick release windshield on both sides. Your chrome nacell will now split apart to show your 4 bolds that lock down your handle bar. See I told you 1 in job but hr to take off the samn chrome. When you put that ling cover piece of chrome back on ..NOT To TiGHt or it will snap the piece the plastic goes on. Hope that helps.

Polishing the chrome

i use Auto Glym super resin wax, or luster lace. Do not use an abrasive polish as it will cloud and scratch the chrome. You can wax chrome with no ill effects whatsoever. Try some pledge on it, you'll be surprised at the results.
