If you have a stock cable you need a 9/16 and a 1/2 in. wrench. about 1/2 way downn the cable there is a rubber boot. pull the rubber boot over the adjustment. Loosen the liock nut and adjust the cable so you have aprox 1/8 to 1/16 in. slack in the handle. Re tighten the lock nut and pull the rubber back over the adjustment.

The advance timing should be 35° before Top Dead Center. This is how you find out which mark this is.

Get the rear wheel of the bike off the ground, remove the spark plugs, shift the bike into fourth gear, and remove the timing plug from the left engine case.
Now, take an ordinary PLASTIC DRINKING STRAW and insert it into the front spark plug hole. Do not use anything else or you stand a chance of it breaking and then you'll have to pull the head to get it out. The plastic straw will bend but not break.
Bump the rear wheel in the direction that it turns while riding down the road until the piston pushes the straw all the way up and just barely starts going back down. Look into the timing hole. You should see a timing mark. This is the Top Dead Center mark. Now, bump the rear wheel BACKWARDS until you see another mark. This should be the ADVANCED TIMING MARK. The piston should 7/16" down from top dead center.

On this model Sportster the timing is advanced by a mechanical advance mechanism. These units are notorious for wearing out and not contolling the timing very well. You must remove the breaker plate to inspect this mechanism. Mark the position of the plate before you remove it. If the pins and holes in the flyweights are worn, replace the unit. Replace it with a good needle bearing unit. Replace the points and reset the gap at 0.018 - 0.020".

You may have to take the breather off to get to the screw. Some of them can be difficult to get to. Standing on the right side of the bike looking down at the air filter, you can see the square looking top of the carb. On the right hand side of the carb near the top is the idle stop screw. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the idle speed.

The idle speed screw is on the right side of the carb when standing on the right side of the bike. You may have to remove the air cleaner to see it. If you can't find it, twist the throttle. You will see the plate move. The screw is attached to it.

Set idle speed between 900-1100rpm. Don't be tempted to set it lower to get the kool Harley idle. The twin-cam oil pumps do not pump enough oil at low idle speeds. Setting for 600-800 MAY cause engine damage.

Mine does that too. If you lower the idle it will then be too slow when the engine is cool. You might be able to lower the idle just a bit but don\'t go too far. Slow idle is hard on the connecting rods. Look at the carburetor. where the cables come down to the carb there is a small screw that you can turn to make adjustments. I would only turn in COUNTER clockwise 1/2 turn to begin with. If it idles too slow when cool you could always pull the choke out a bit but that can be a nuisance. Try that to see if it helps.

Hi Anonymous, the idle set screw is on the right side of carburetor it's a brass screw with a spring behind it. Also there is a cam stop screw where the ends of the throttle cables hook into. Hi Deeprun5, on the right hand side of the carburator there is an idle adjusting screw with a spring behind it, turn screw clockwise to increase idle counter clockwise to decrease idle. There is also an air/fuel mixture screw inside a carb body lug that may or may not be plugged with an aluminum cap that's about 3/16" thick. This cap can be drilled out to acess the air/fuel mixture screw. Turning screw clockwise will lean out mixture and lower idle, turning screw counter clockwise will richen mixture and raise idle. You need to balance the two adjusting screws to obtain an idle of 950-1000 RPM then back out air/fuel mixture screw 1/4 turn, snap throttle to confirm responce, you may continue to back out air/fuel mixture screw untill desired throttle responce is achieved, if you see black smoke coming out of exhaust you have gone to far and need to turn screw back in 1/8 turn at a time, final adjustment should be made with the engine at normal operating temperature. If your carb is stock, the only thing you can adjust is the idle speed. The throttle stop screw is located at the top right of the carb. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the idle speed.

To adjust the idle mixture, you'll have to drill out the anti-tamper plug on the backside of the carb. This will require the removal of the carb from the engine. Turn the carb upside down and look just to the rear of the float bowl. Do not drill too deeply to remove this plug or you'll damage the idle mixture needle and they are NOT available separately from the dealer. Drill just deep enough to go through the plug. Tap the hole for a small screw, insert the screw and use a pair of pliers to pull the plug out. Some of them are in pretty tight. Put the carb back on the engine. Start the engine and bet it ot operating temp. Adjust the idle mixture screw for the best idle and then set the idle speed at about 1000 RPM.

Only adjustment that can be made are to the idle, idle mixture and needle valve which requires some disassembly. Idle mixture should be mae when engine is warm. remove brass plug on bottom of carb ( need to drill out) be carefull, may need to remove carb. Install carb, warm up engine and adjust screw in or out to acheive best idle, then turn in 1/4 turn. adjust engine idle to 900- 950 rpm. If engine smokes under accel drop needle down 1 notch, if seems weak or hesitates under load, raise needle one notch, refer to Harley manual for specifics

To set carb adjustment, first set timing correctly, then put both a vacuum gauge and tach on the engine. adjust one idle screw to highest vacuum reading and highest tach reading, then do the other one. go back to the first and re-adjust again, then the other. I find that if you have a mechanical screw or a solenoid that holds idle speed on the linkage, turn them back so that engine is idling at the lowest possible rpm without stalling before making adjustments, then when finished, bring idle rpm up to recommended rpm using those. On an older carb, usually the idle screw covers have already been removed. If not, you need to remove them before you begin, usually best done with carb on a bench.

Carburator needs ajusting with stage 1


Unless the "anti-tamper plug" has been removed that covers the idle mixture screw, you cannot adjust the carb. If the plug has been removed, you adjust the carb exactly like you would any other carb, for the highest, smoothest idle speed. Once this is obtained, adjust the idle stop screw to obtain the correct idle speed of 1000-1100 RPM.
