Question about Motorcycles

1 Answer

I just changed the oil in my Honda 750 Shadow and switched to Synthetic Oil. As you mentioned this could cause the clutch to slip. Wel it 's slipping. What's the fix?

Will the clutch situation work itself out? Should I go back to regular oil?

I'm assuming that you have a "wet" clutch, unlike most cars that have a "dry" clutch. "Wet" means that the clutch sits in the engine oil, "dry" ... that it doesn't!
It's very important that you use only oil specifically made for motorcycles if you have a wet clutch, synthetic or not. The formulation of the oil-additives is different if it is to be used with clutches.

Using "normal" "car" oil, whether it is synthetic or not, is highly likely to result in clutch slip.

If this is what has happened then I can only suggest this course of action:
> Drop that oil out and replace the oil filter
> Refill with cheap motorcycle oil
> Drive for 10 or so miles, get the engine nice and warm
> Drop that oil out
> Refill with cheap motorcycle oil again and drive 10 miles
>> Hopefully at this point the clutch slip will be gone
> Drop that oil out and change the oil filter.
> Now fill with "nice" motorcycle oil

Best of luck :-)

Your clutch plates have lasted 25 years. It is probably time to get some new plates. Have your dealer get you a set of Barnett clutch plates.

How many miles are on the Bike? Could be time for a clutch adjustment, or replacement. Make sure you also change the clutch springs as they wear also. Just to be safe go back to using your regular oil, I do not prefer the synthetic oil in my bike...

What oil should i use and what filere...2006 shadow...750?

Your oil filter part number from Honda is #15410-MFJ-D01.The Honda filter is the best quality filter available for your machine. Other brands of spin on are available from Fram, Emgo, Amsoil, etc. Your oil capacity is 3.4 quarts of motorcycle. To change your oil you will need 4 quarts of oil, a filter, and a new aluminum drain plug washer. You can reuse the old drain plug washer if it has not been squished out of shape. Your motorcycle comes from Honda usually with 10w-40 mineral base motorcycle oil. You can use any oil that is JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. 10w-40 for cold climate. 20w-50 for warm climate/touring. Automotive oils use different additives and may cause scoring in certain types of cam bearings. Do not use any oil that says " Energy Conserving " on the label . It will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. If you choose Synthetic oils, they will help your bike run cooler and shift easier. Pour in 3.2 quarts of oil or till it reads on the dip stick or inspection window. Make sure the motorcycle is upright or on the center stand when checking the level . You will probably need 3.4 quarts to hit the high mark. Run the motor for a minute or two to fill the oil filter compartment with oil. Now recheck the oil level and top up as needed. If you want to try an "inexpensive" full synthetic oil that is JASO MA rated 15w-40 Shell Rotella T Synthetic fits the bill at about $23 per gallon. All brands/manufacturers make a motorcycle oil. Some are very hard to find. Just make sure that the oil you pick has the JASO MA "Japanese Rating" to protect your motorcycle engine, clutch and transmission.

What kind of oil do i need for my 2003 honda shadow ace 750

Usually motorcycle-grade 10w30 or 10w40 works well. NEVER use automotive oil in your bike. It was fine to do back in the 80's, but not now. Automotive oils have too many additives in them and eventually cause clutch slippage in motorcycles. Cars don't have oil-dampened clutches in their engines. So they can use slipperier additives.

Hi. I recently bought a 2006 Honda 750 shadow, this is my first shaft drive bike and I know very little about them. I may seem a bit thick asking this, but is the final drive casing supposed to get hot?

On long drives the final drive will get hot to the touch. This is normal. As long as the there a proper amount of 80/90 Hypoid gear oil you should not have any problems. As you know friction causes heat , One suggestion would be to use synthetic Hypoid gear oil
( less friction = less heat )

Did you do an oil change recently? Sometimes a motor cycles clutch shares the oil with the engine and a different kind of oil then the bike requires will cause the clutch to slip. This happens alot especially if someone switches to some types of synthetic oil when the bike had regular oil before the oil change.

Neeed oil change information

I always use a fram filter from advance auto parts. As for oil, The older bike should not run synthetic oil. The clutches were not designed for it and can cause slipping. I use Valvoline 5w30. Should hold around 3 quarts. There should be a dipstick or site glass on the right side of the engine, almost behind the exhaust.

Repsol MOTO Gasoline Motor OIl,4T,Sintetico synthetic blend 10W40

Repsol Moto 4T Sintetico Synthetic Oil - 10W40

Synthetic blend lubricant with high thermal stability, designed to meet the needs of the most technologically advanced 4-stroke motorcycle engines.
  • Excellent starting and lubrication in cold conditions due to its low viscosity.
  • Meets JASO MA API SJ requirements.
Its fine to change your oil with synthetic, Just be sure that you use synthetic from now on... I don't think its advisable to switch back to regular oil after using synthetic.
