Question about 2003 Harley Davidson FXSTDI Softail Deuce

1 Answer

I recently washed my 2005 custom chopper and thought that I had dried it off well enough, obviously not! The bike has an S&S 111 engine and when I went to go for a ride I turned the ignition key and the bike started to turn over very weekly and then went completely dead, no head light nothing. I then tried jumping it with my truck and got head lights and all other acss. but when I went to start it just clicked. The bike ran fine up to the point of washing it now nothing but clicking any help out there?

Take a leaf blower and dry the bike with it, after washing any bike you should use a "light" powerd leaf blower to dry your bike. Just let the water dry out and you should be fine. If not pull out all the fuses and hand dry them before you them back in and try it...

I need to know the size of the center hole on a 19 tooth transmission sprocket for an apc mini chopper Thanks

Why do you need to know the size of the centre hole. That one look in great condition. The size is the size of the shaft it fits on, so you measure the narrower distance, which is between the sprocket tooth that is under the middle of your thumb nail, to the second tooth past your index finger. All this links have info.

I have (2) questions. 1 is the dip stick on my S&S 107" Big Dog. It has two notches/grooves. (1) is at the bottom of the stick, and (1) is at the top towards the rubber cap. Are those the add...

Well, I don't know about a Big Dog but I do know how the dipstick on a Harley is set up. You have two marks on the stick. The top mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Since the S&S engine is just like a Harley engine in that it is a dry sump type engine. When you check the oil when the engine is cold, as long as the oil is touching the dipstick, you should be OK to ride. Once the engine comes up to temp, then check the oil and bring it close to the top mark. Do not overfill. Never add oil to a cold engine unless you cannot see oil on the stick.

Now, for the leak on the left side of your bike. Now you said that your Big Dog is a custom chopper and your replaced the main seal. You did not tell me whether your primary drive is a standard chain drive primary or an open belt drive as so many "custom choppers" run. If you replaced the main seal, did you lubricate the inside lip of the seal before you installed it. If not, when the engine starts up, the friction will burn up the lip of the seal before the oil gets to it. It only takes a half second to burn the lip of the seal. Always put oil or light grease on the seal lips when you install a seal.

If your primary drive is a standard chain type, the leak could be a bad engine to primary O-ring that goes between the engine and the inner primary cover.

Another place that the oil could be coming from is the nosecone. If the oil is leaking out of the bottom of the nosecone, it can leak down to the centerline of the cases. When you put your bike on the kickstand, the oil will then run across to the left side and drip off. The best way to find the leak is to clean everything off as clean as you can get it. Then go for a short ride and come back and look for the leak.

    I hope this helps.

It seems to me that the wide tires, if properly inflated, would not adversely or significantly cause an increased load to the engine, unless they were underinflated. I would just look for clearance issues on the fork and other parts of the frame and mud guards.

In the 1980s, when all terrain bicycles were introduced with 'fat' tires, increased traction on roads compared to their skinny tire race bike counterparts was enjoyed by the masses (Mountain bikes vs. racing bikes).

I think that on a motorcycles, the same would apply.

I don't think the K&N filter would significantly increase pickup, despite advertising to the opposite. Just use standard air filters.

Good luck on modifying your bike to your 'dream machine.'

    e) Ensure your air filter box insides and element are not wet after washing the bike.
I hope those pointers can help you resolve your problem, as I strongly believe your main culprit is your battery charge more than anything else. Is suggestion good enough?
