Composite Head Gasket used for this application. I have read one of the holes in these blocks was not drilled deep enough, making it hard to seat head once refinished. Composit head Gasket is suppose to be more forgiving on imperfections, If I understand correctly. Thank you for any insight.
The correct practice when doing head work is to remove any build up at that base of the holes and to run a thread tap down to ensure that the thread is clean all the way to the bottom. Blow out the holes with compressed air. In you case leave the head off and screw in each bolt all the way by hand and measure the distance between the head of the bolt and the block surface . IT should be much smaller than the width of the head by say 1/4". If it is then the bolts will allow enough compression of any sort of gasket used . A point of interest here is that this engine uses a torque setting until all the bolts are set and then the final torque is obtained by angular setting of the head of the stud/bolt. Use the correct tensioning sequence as this is vital to set the head properly..
Thank you for the advice Bill, I will measure the bolts at full depth if I replace the gasket again. After some research I found the incorrect torque was used for this gasket type, it was about 5lbs. less on MLS than Composite. I plan to check torque and tighten if needed. If replacing the gasket is needed I will buy head studs, as the bolts I am using are only one-time use.

wowwwww it is so dificult, and might be between 7 to 11 hrs labor to do it, depending on engine size.

The blocks dont normally crack as much as the heads do,so i would look at the heads first,But if its done say 200,000 miles plus and not been serviced every 6,000 miles!the chances are that the engine wear will be high, this is all assuming its petrol not Diesel, and you may want to tread carefully as to how much money you spend fixing it.Heads only youd probably do it but an engine....youd want to get a good secondhandie,as to the age of the vehicle

You can do a compression test on each cylinder, if one or two cylinders are lower than the others, that could be a sign of a blown head gasket. Also, do a pressure test on the cooling system to see if the cooling system holds pressure. Check your oil for anti-freeze, and vise-versa. Any white foam around the oil cap? Or oil around the radiator cap?
