Will not idle down

I have a 2007 HD Night Train. It has D&D exhaust air induction intake. If I ride it for 10 minutes or so it will not idle back down. If I shut it off and fire it back off it idles fine until I ride agian back to the same thing.

You have to take it into the dealer and have them adjust your idle with the digital tech, thats the only way to set the idle on these newer injected bikes.

The idle is completely computer controlled, it is not adjustable.

Induction module troubleshooting cough

Hi Anonymous, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module is usually caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck

2013 HD fxs blackine got hit on bike went down right side changed gas tank swapped everything over no problem at first the bike kept stalling after few mins idled fine took for ride no power2 to 3thousand...

Check the intake runners are actually sealing. HD mount the air cleaner on the right and this could cause an air leak in the induction system.

I changed my dead battery on 05 night train....starts fine and seems to run good for about 15 minutes....then wants to die with very low idle at a stop..or slowing down

Hi Redmiston64, on the right hand side of the carburator there is an idle adjusting screw with a spring behind it, turn screw clockwise to increase idle counter clockwise to decrease idle. There is also an air/fuel mixture screw inside a carb body lug that may or may not be plugged with an aluminum cap that's about 3/16" thick. This cap can be drilled out to acess the air/fuel mixture screw. Turning screw clockwise will lean out mixture and lower idle, turning screw counter clockwise will richen mixture and raise idle. You need to balance the two adjusting screws to obtain an idle of 950-1000 RPM then back out air/fuel mixture screw 1/4 turn, snap throttle to confirm responce, you may continue to back out air/fuel mixture screw untill desired throttle responce is achieved, if you see black smoke coming out of exhaust you have gone to far and need to turn screw back in 1/8 turn at a time. Good luck.

Have a B&S, Vanguard, 23HP motor, model 386777 with 300hrs on it. Motor starts and runs fairly well, but a fair amount of smoke is being emitted from air intake. Very evident with air cleaner removed....

sounds like you have a bad set of rings on one cylinder,or a bad valve set.
the stronger compression cylinder will burn richer due to the fact that the lower compression cylinder isnt pulling a hard enough vacumme to draw in all the fuel that is dumped into the intake.when the good cylinder makes it intake stroke it pulls in the excess fuel and a fresh amount from the carb.

im leaning more towards the valve train on the bad cylinder due to the white smoke comming from the carb,if the intake valve isnt seating properly, you will have compression escaping, back feeding through the intake.but yoy should hear a popping along with the smoke, everytime the engine fires that cylinder.
hope this info helps you.

4 stroke
#1 intake stroke
exhaust valve closed, intake valve open.as the piston is on its way to the bottom of the bore,it creates a vacumme.drawing in the air/fuel mixture from the carb.when the piston hits the bottom of its downward travel, the intake valve closes, then the next stroke comes into play.

#2 compression stroke
after drawing in the air fuel mixture, the intake and exhaust valve are both closed.the rotating momentium pushes the piston back up the cylinder, compressing the air/fuel into the cylinder.

#3 power stroke
(depending on the timing)when the cylinder reaches top dead center (tdc)in the bore.the spark plug ignites the fuel, which causes the air/fuel mix explode.that explosion forces the piston back down into the bore.when the piston travels down, this stroke is completed.

#4 exhaust stroke
after the power stroke, the piston then travels back up the bore, while opening the exhaust valve.the moving pistion then pushes the exhausted air through the exhaust chamber and out the muffler.

then the cycle starts over again.
so if you have a valve thats not seating properly,on compression stroke you will have loss of compression,on the power stroke, loss of power....forcing that ignited fuel back through the valve that isnt seated corectly(if intake) you will get white smoke and a poping sound from the carb.on the exhaust stroke it will sent exhausted air back through the intake aswell.

once again i hope this helps,id dig into the valve train on that cylinder.
