Question about 2004 Honda VT 750 Shadow Aero

Honda Shadow 750 keeps stalling and backfires

My Honda Shadow 750 keeps stalling and backfires. I had it overhauled quite recently, so I know everything is as it should be regarding plugs, clean air filters, etc. The only thing is I haven't ridden it for a couple of weeks and had it under a bike cover. I'm in FL so I gets REALLY hot during the day. It's low on fuel now, but not out, and I switched to the reserve tank just to be sure (I was on my way to get gas, actually). I had this problem when I first bought the bike, which led to my having it overhauled. It's run great since then, but it seems 2 or 3 weeks off and I'm right back where I was. Is this because of the ethanol in the gas now, or is water getting in my tank or something?

Not sure how to drain my carbeurator - I guess I can Google the instructions. Also, I'm not sure who has gas without ethanol - even the premium high octane has ethanol in it, doesn't it? All the signs at the pumps say, "Minimum 10% ethanol" or something like that.

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated!

I'm in Orlando. I generally just get Mobil because it's convenient, but I've stopped at a few others and they all seem to say they have ethanol. Is there a brand you know of that doesn't use it (Shell, etc.) or do you think just switching to a higher octane will help?

I'll give a look for that screw tomorrow. The guy I had tune-up my bike works next door to me and I'll have him point it out if I can't find it.

Thanks again. I had a feeling it was just the gas or something simple. It's a great bike when it runs, but this stalling is just a recurring issue and major pain.

Chances are that your state has a law requiring Ethanol. The engine was designed to burn premium gas.

I am in Dallas, Texas. Where are you that all the gas has Ethanol? On the carb there will be a screw or plug in the bottom or side of the float bowl. Just remove it and the gas will drain.

Drain the carb into a clear glass and look for any water in the bottom of the glass. Moist air can condensate in the gas tank and make it to the carb. DO NOT use gas with Ethanol. It will corrode the carb. Use only premium gas.

I have a 83 Sabre V45 which had the same problem. I removed the top covers of all carburators, and found 1 diaphragm had a hole in it. I replaced it, and everything worked fine. Hope this helps.

Clean and inspect the carb diaphragms when you have the carbs apart to clean them. Concentrate on the slow jets and the passage ways behind the slow jets.

Bike missing and backfiring... put new plugs in 2001 ace 750

I'm trying to think away the possibility of a burt vave. Have you run the valve adjustment? Carb adjustment is very critical, Too lean will cause backfiring or stumbling and too rich will cause deccel popping at the exhaust. One other thing, Vacuum leaks screw everything up so it wouldn't hurt to ck all the vacuum lines make sure of no cracks or loose fits. Safly, you may need to just run it out and hope for it to clear up.Make sure the plug wires are not laying on anything. Take some electrical spray cleaner and rinse og the top of the coilnd the plug wire. I'll keep thinking on this and if I stumble on anything I'll you know. Ned

Rough start on Honda 750 Aero Shadow. Starts great in reserve, but when you shut reserve off it stalls out. Backfired too. Any advice?

Chances are the main filter screen is plugged with rust and trash. The reserve filter screen doesn't get used much so trash hasn't been drawn into it too much. Remove the gas petcock assembly and clean it. You may want to consider a liquid tank liner. It will seal the rust so that it will no longer be a problem. Google “ kreem liquid fuel tank liner “ or go to www.http://www.4secondsflat.com/Fuel_Tank_Sealer.html
