Question about 1981 Yamaha XJ 650

Setting carbs and setting valves

The bike has been sitting for a couple of years so I was going to clean the carbs and tank, but I dont know for sure how to set them again once I take them apart. I also want to run the valves but don't know what the air gap is for them. Need help please.

Around that year , yamaha used small disks(no screw adjustment) for valve adjustments, so you measured the free play and bought new ones according to the gap.best set up is just a few 0.001" of an inch at tdc

Bike's been sitting most of the summer. Have no acceleration or power.


Hi, Scott if your bike has been idle for months or years and does not want to start or runs poorly you will have to deal with a few remedies:
1. Drain and flush fuel tank, google " how to clean a motorcycle gas tank" find a couple forums to view the different options available.
2. Remove your air cleaner and clean and re-oil per Mfg. specifications.
3. Remove the carburetor, disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air
4. Remove fuel valve and filter disassemble and clean as necessary, remove fuel lines and replace with new ones.
5. Replace spark plug with a new one and check for spark.

Cranks no start or fire add gas down throat of carbs and it back fires out pipes and carbs


bikes that sit for long periods of time need there points or electronics pick-ups serviced , rust and aluminum corrosion happens over time on these

miss fires are sure signs of this to mean out of time

and yes the carbs/tank will need a total cleaning out too

Fuel leak from carburettor


No need to buy a new carb. Simply clean it and or replace the float needle valve. Check float level also after replacing the float needle valve. Most of the time the carb gums up and causes this to happen when sitting for a long time without being run. If you are going to store your bike for a while. Drain all the fuel from the carbs and gas tank before storing. You can also use a gas stabilizer in not setting up more than 3 months.

If it has been sat for 2 years the fuel will have broken down so a full system flush with new clean fuel is a good 1st step.

If you have checked the carbs was there any sludge build up in the float chambers. If so I would dismantle and carefully clean with new fuel.

Make sure the tank is emptied and has not rusted. When you know you have clean new fuel. Try starting again.

When you get it running you need to use either a pair or easier 4 vacuum gauges to recalibrate the carbs.

This is fairly straightforward and a cheap set can be bought for as little as 8 pounds try Amazon. Obviously more expensive = better quality but if you are careful with them even a cheap set can be quite reliable.

Tip - Check each gauge against cylinder 1 for reading then you know if they are reading the same. Some are adjustable or just mark and set all to cylinder 1.

2.5 - 3.5 turns out sounds about right as a start point as you said.

The bike wont rev up, spits and sputters idles fine. carbs have been cleaned and sinked new plugs and fuel filter.


Hi, Marvin if your bike has been sitting idle for months or years and you did not do any pre-storage maintenance I feel your pain it will probably have a dead battery and not want to start or if it starts it will idle and run poorly, here are the following steps necessary to complete in order to get your bike back to an acceptable running condition.
1. If your battery was 2-3 years old when you last had the bike running you should replace it.
2. If you believe your battery might still be serviceable remove it from the bike and put it on a 1 or 2 amp trickle charger for 24 hours. If it is the old lead acid type with visible cells and acid levels fill each cell to the top line with distilled water and replace the caps, run the vent tube into a plastic or styrofoam cup, any cells that are cloudy/milky replace the battery.
3. After charging remove the leads and let the battery sit for a couple of hours then check the battery voltage with a volt meter, you should have 12.5 volts or better, any readings in the 11 volt range you need to do a proper load test on the battery and replace as necessary, any readings in the 10 volt range you have a dead cell and replace the battery.
4. Drain and flush fuel tank, google " how to clean a motorcycle gas tank" find a couple forums to view the different options available.
5. Remove your air cleaner and clean and re-oil per Mfg. specifications.
6. Remove the carburetor, disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air

I bought a 1985 GS 550 LF. It had been sitting for a year, so battery was dead tank & carbs were dirty, clutch cable was broke. I fixed the clutch cable, cleaned the gas tank, bought a new battery and...


Gas pouring out of the carbs means the float pin are not sealing in thus the over flow.
Go a little down thn .77in , best would be to bench set them.
Take a pipe say from the tank to the feed pipe of the carbs (best would be to remove the tank and place it higher on your work bench to get the gravity flow to the feed pipe of the carbs)
Allow the flow to the carbs and monitor the over flow, see which carbs over flow, remove the float bowl and reset the float and let it go a little less thn .77in, refit the bowl and retry the feed in and recheck..you will come to a point where gas wont over flow, open the bowl and see the level of the gas , it should be covering the jets, but remember that since you will have the float bowl out the gas will show low as when its submersed, the jet stem in the float bowl pushes the gas level up so dont get mixed up when you see the level low , i am sure you will be able to judge it for yourself.
I had the same problem in myYamaha(seca) XJ750R !981and finally managed to win over the problem going over it the way I explained.

Need help starting up two 1984 honda xr200's


First, change the spark plug and oil. The stock plug is NGK DPR8Z and 10w40 motor oil is what you need. There is no oil filter. Changing the oil acts as the "filter". Lubricate the chain. be sure it has no kinks in it. If kinks, then get a new 520 chain. The stock sprockets are 50 tooth and 13 tooth. Lubricate the control cables with liquid graphite, ( Lock Eze ). Make sure the tires have adequate pressure. Check the spokes and snug up any that are lose.

The carbs will be your only problem area. The bike has four valves and a primary/secondary carb set up. The dual carb setup makes the bike more responsive. The set up does mean twice the effort to clean the carbs and twice the likelihood something will go sour. Sitting for two years is not a good thing. The gas in the carbs evaporates and leaves varnish to gum up the jets and passageways. If the fuel petcock (gas valve) was left open, you can really have a problem. Remove the gas tank. Dump out the gas tank and inspect it. Is there rust in the drained gas? If so, remove the petcock and put a LOT of large nuts into the tank and shake the tank well to let the abrasive action of the nuts break away the loose rust. Flush the tank well. You may want to consider a tank liner. This will solve the rust problem forever. Google “ kreem fuel tank liner “ or go to

Disassemble and clean the petcock. Now install an in-line fuel filter and make sure the fuel line is clear. On the bottom of the carb(s) is a drain plug. Remove the plug and and hope it is clean. Open the gas valve and see if gas is flowing past the float valve. If you lucked out and the plug was pretty clean and WITHOUT RUST, go ahead and install the plug, turn on the gas and see if it will start up. If the bike runs poorly after warming up, your next project is to clean the carbs.

FOR EACH carb > Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside of the carb and spray into the screw holes as well.
< < READ CLOSELY > >
Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the carb back together and install the carb. Clean or replace the air filter. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

Buell blast is backfiring. Sat for 2 years so, cleaned fuel tank and cleaned carb. It will start now but is backfiring and will die of I try to idle. Thanks


If you did not completely disassemble the carb and remove all jets/emulsion tubes/needle valves then you did not clean the carb adequately. You could try adding either Seafoam, the Yamaha CARB-CL-EAN-ER, or Techron fuel system cleaner in an auxiliary gas tank and running the engine for a short while to ensure the mix gets into all the nooks and crannies. Let it sit for a couple hours to do the work, then drain out the float bowl, hook up the bike's gas tank and see what happens. Otherwise you need to remove, strip, clean, reassemble, and reinstall the carb.

Vstar leaking gas when i try to start it


HELLO THIS IS AN EASY ONE.

FIRST
****CAUTION**** IF IT IS FLODDING GAS OUT OF IF.THE GAS CAN ALSO BE GOING INTO YOUR AIR BOX.IF THE BIKE BACK FIRES IT WILL IGNIGHT THE OLD FUEL THAT HAS CLOECTED IN THE AIR BOX AND YOU COULD LOSE YOUR BIKE BE CAREFULL AND KEEP CHECK ON THE AIR BOX AND FILTER DURING THE INTIRE PROCCES

WELL TO ANSWER .YOUR CARBS ARE VARNISHED UP.THIS IS CAUSED FROM THE BIKE SETTING FOR SO LONG.THE LEAKING GAS IS FROM THE FLOATS NOT BEING ABLE TO FLOAT BECAUSE OF THE VARNISHING.AND OF COURSE THE NEDDLE VAVLE IS STUCK(THAT IS WHAT SHUTS THE FUEL OF INSIDE THE CARBS)

YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE THEM APART AND CLEN THEM VERY GOOD,AND THIS IS GOING TO BE QUITE A JOB ON THIS BIKE.

IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO TAKE IT TO SHOP IT WOULD BE EASYER FOR YOU.;HOWEVER A GOOD GUESS AT THE PRICE TO DO THIS ,I WOULD SAY AT THE DEALER YOU MAY BE LOOKING AT 300.00 DOLLARS ARE MORE DEPENDING ON THE DAMAGE.

OH I ALMOST FORGOT.YOU WILL HAVE TO CLEAN THE TANK OUT OF THE OLD FUEL AND MAYBE THE VARNISHING.AND I DONT KNOW IF THIS BIKE HAS A FUEL PUMP ARE IF IT GRAVITY FEED .YOU MAY HAVE TO CLEAN OUT THE PUMP IF IT HAS ONE AS I SAID I DONT KNOW ON THIS BIKE.AND THE PETCOCK VALVE(FUEL ON AND OF VAVLE) MAY ALSO NEED TO BE LOOKED AT
