I got a 1983 xr80. What are the piston/cylinder clearance specs.. stock? And how much can I hone/bore out?

most piston /ring kits come in .010" , .020",.030",.040" oversize
most engine re-conditioners use cnc borers set to an over size and bore to that
after honing to get the correct cross hatch pattern in the bore , that is it
the ring gap is what is important and it should be around .003" per ever 1" of bore
so for a 3" bore the gap should be around .010"
experience has proved that if the cylinder is bored to say .020" oversize then when the gap for .020" oversize rings is checked ,it generally comes in around .015 and even as large as .020"
max specs for ring gaps is .025" which is for a worn cylinder
just honing a bore is a waste of effort as bores wear in a taper ( larger at the top than the bottom and this taper increases the wear of the new rings and can lead to broken rings
the ridge at the top of the bore has to be removed to allow the piston to come out easily and to prevent piston failure when the new rings are fitted
have a talk with engine reconditioning shops and then make an informed decision
remember that if the cylinder can be separated from the crankcase , you can buy standard or oversize piston/ring/cylinder sets as assemblies so there is no need to bore out or hone.

Yamaha dt125 won't start

Many piston compression (rather than oil) rings are uni-directional, and need to be installed with the proper side upward. The rings will have a "T" or "TOP" etched on the surface that needs to face upwards.
So my first question is, did you install the rings upside down?

Second, why did you replace the rings?
Did you measure the cylinder bore? Was it oversized, or out of round?
Is the bore worn enough that the piston is now too loose a fit?
Did you get the correct size rings? If you bored the cylinder, did you get the proper oversize rings?

82 yamaha xj550 bad starter switch?

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Tip over sensor needs a reset.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
10. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
11. Check for engine trouble codes.

Oil level via the glass window. I never saw the oil level in the glass window (whether bike was running or not). I was leaking a lot of oil from the airbox hose, and the air filter was oil soaked. So I...

When the bike is on the center stand and on a level surface, the oil should be in the middle of the window. Chances are strong that compression is getting past the piston rings and into the gear box. The compression carries air and fuel into the box. The fuel mixes with the oil and will increase the amount of "oil-gas" in the box. As the oil-gas level rises, the air carries some of the oil-gas out of the box and into the air box. The fix is to bore the cylinders and install 1st oversize piston and rings. Re-seat the valves wile the engine is apart. Put it all back together and you have a near new engine with power you did not know was there.

New valves, valve guides, valve guide seals; all fine but probably not needed. When the piston was changed, did you run a cylinder hone in the bore to check for distorted cylinder walls? Was the old piston seized up at any time? Were there scratches or grooves cut into the cylinder wall from being seized? Did the new piston get new rings? Chances are you will need to have the cylinder bored then install a new 1st oversize piston and rings. Please rate my answer.

I have one kawasaki z 1000 st, and I want to change the ring set of the piston, I recived by ebay this ring set from germany by S M , in the box noted 1,2 x1,2x2,50 and 70,50 : I don't understend because...

Here is the deal; Assuming the rings that were sent to you are the correct thickness for the piston ring grooves but were actually made for a 1st, 2nd or 3rd oversize piston, they may still be able to be used. Put a single ring into the cylinder. There should be an end gap of about .025 in the ring. If not, you can carefully grind the end of the ring by using a bench grinder or a rotary grinder. File off any rough edges. Re-fit in the cylinder and check the end gap. If you do not have a thickness guage, .025 is about the thickness of a paper matchstick. Once all rings have been fitted for cylinder size, mount them on the piston and put the bike back together. Please rate my answer. Thanks.
