SOURCE: have a 1998 4runner. automatic.

Check the brake lights when the the problem occurs, the system has an electric interlock that dis-engages a lock-out pin and allows you to come out of park only when the brake light circuit is active and it gets a 12 volt signal from the brake light switch, other issues are the solenoid that pulls the pin back and the cable and linkage sticking, pull the cover off the linkage and make sure everything works freely.

SOURCE: light in toyota corolla VE 98, automatic gear

you have to remove the screws (or bolts) inside the center console compartment. pry up the little ring around the shifter. pull up the e-brake and pull that whole assembly up. once removed there is a small 194 bulb located on the drivers side on the bottom. you should see the little black base. twist counterclockwise to remove. replace bulb and reinstall

How to get 2000 Toyota 4Runner out of gear when battery is dead?

There is a shift lock override button on the shifter in the upper left corner, it may have a small cover on it the size of a dime or smaller. Pop this cover off and press the button inside. This will work.

How do you change out a 1991 toyota 4runner automatice transmission gear shifter assembly

park lock failure
did you know the FSM covers this 100%?
on some cars its a mix if electrical and mechincal.
some cars have a cable from the park lock to the key.
did you wiggle the steering to be sure the steering lock is not the issue?
alldata.com may have the same checks, try there if in hurry
or get a real FSM.

Jeep wrangler 2005 automatic floor gear shifter is loose won't engage stuck in park

try pushing the knob down onto the shifter a little bit then try and shift. Sometimes if that knob is raised even a little bit it will be locked in park. Can't be 100% sure without seein it but worth a shot. Hope that helps you.

Toyota Camry 1999 shifter stuck in park however battery is dead?

Connect jumpers to battery, as it needs power for brake pedal to actuate shifter lock.

My 2005 Toyota 4runner ABS warning light came on and went off. Now I can't shift into any gear. (auto)????

Look for a bad brake light switch above the brake pedal. If the brake light switch is not working, the shifter unlock solenoid, which gets power form the brake light switch, will not activate, and your shifter will not come out of park.
