Why would my 1999 Durango feel like it is losing power while cruising along the highway?

I would start with a simple tune-up if you haven't done one recently. Nothing too technical on most vehicles (my Honda was a pain to remove the rotor button).
Get new sparkplugs properly gapped, new distributor cap and rotor button, and a new air filter. You may be dropping a cylinder when you're going down the road. A simple tune-up (if one has not been performed in the past year) can help solve many problems. It can also help if troubleshooting an issue. Most people don't think about replacing things like sparkplugs until they have a problem. Manufacturers usually give a recommended mileage for the change interval. And no, not all spark plugs are the same. Some vehicles are extremely particular about what spark plug you use.

Engine missing mainly between 45 and 55 mph

I'm going to assume you have the 3.4 V6 engine which uses direct ignition with a coil on each plug.
Could be ignition or fuel related.
A weak spark/coil will allow the engine to run on all 6 cylinders at idle but miss under load, especially when going into overdrive at 45 mph. Not enough spark to jump the gap.
Same thing with low fuel pressure or dirty injectors. Not enough fuel when the engine is working hard.
Usually when you get a hard miss you will get a trouble code for the cylinder that is not giving power.
Have you changed the fuel filter in the past 12 months ?

Engine seemed to skip at about 70 mph and service engine light came on. Then seemed to skip several more times at different speeds. Ran fine. Just continued to skip as we drove.

hi the engine is not skipping the problem is the engine is miss firing
that is caused by a bad .spark plug or -wires-or coil pack - when was the last time the
car had a tune up . check spark plug connections

Engine light came on , it runs very rough, shakes, lost pwr

It sounds like an ignition problem. Make sure your battery is good and connections are clean. I would start by replacing the plug wires and spark plugs. This is a good tune up procedure anyway and will increase your mileage some. Clean or change the air filter. The obvious thing is to make sure the oil is new and filled to the correct level, not overfilled. Your engine will love you. I hope this helps.

99 ford escort se gets no power and stutters.

When was the last time the timing belt was replaced on it? The cam timing may be retarded back from belt stretch creating this problem. Another thing to check out is if your catalytic converter may be partially plugged up.

Engine Back fired, blew out muffler.

Sounds like you may have gotten some debris in your exhaust pipe or something was clogging your muffler. Maybe the innerds of you Catalytic Coverter went and got stuck or the innerds of your muffler gave out. That would be the only few things I could think of to cause something like that.

Sincerely,

JC
