sounds like you have a vacumm leak get a bottle of water and with it running squirt water on intake and carburator boots if it starts to idle down you have a leak or with carb cleaner spray the same area if idle goes up you have a leak

1982 harley backfire

Hi Anonymous, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module can be caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck and have nice day.

My mower starts fine and then it idles up and down and up and down and dies? I have changed oil, plugs, fuel filter, air filter

First thing to check would be the base governor setting. This should be done by someone with small engine expertise. Can be fatal to engine and do bodily harm if not done right.Other things to check would be air leaks where carb manifold attaches to heads.Remove air cleaner assembly to gain access to carb linkage and manifold. You will need a can of carb cleaner to perform this check.Start engine and hold throttle at just above idle speed and carefully spray area where manifold attaches to head,do this on both ends of manfold and at carb base, area where carb mounts to manifold,if leak is present the engine will either die or their will be a change in rpm,s.If no leaks are found in these areas have carb cleaned,it is very likely there is dirt in the carb. You can do the same as above, start engine and hold throttle just above idle and spray carb cleaner into carb, engine will try to stall when doing this, only spray carb cleaner in carb while engine is running. If this doesn't help have carb cleaned and adjusted.Info from small engine tech with forty plus years experience.

Everytime i stop for a long or short time the car will cut off i replace the spark plugs and wires and the roader cap and ball

Possible vacuum leak. Use a can of carb cleaner spray to check for vacuum leaks. Remove air cleaner housing assembly and plug the vacuum line. Start car. While idling in park, spray cleaner around base of carb, intake manifold to head area and around all vacuum lines. If the idle increases or smooths while spraying an area, that is where the vacuum leak is.

Leaking oil at air cleaner area

Hmm, take off the air cleaner cover, clean it all out, then fire the bike up, see if you still have a problem, it sounds like the engine vent might be plugged or restricted. After my old shovel sits for awhile, it always pukes out all the oil from the crankcase out the vent tube, but mine runs out on the swingarm, yours might run up to the air cleaner, too

Idles revs by itself

You have an air leak in the intake system. The fuel mix is getting lean from excess air mixing with the gas. New gaskets and seals between carb and head will usually take care of the problem. Any oil stains around the base of the cylinder head? Head gasket going bad.if there is. The gasket could be the leak. Time for a valve job? Air getting sucked in past an exhaust valve or two? Have the compression checked. Find the leak(s) and you find the fix.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!

Oil leak from air cleaner area

Hello bpowell456....this is more or less a generic problem on the harley.... an over filled oil tank will make it puke oil from the intake and a sticky check ball valve will cause it also...this ball type valve allows oil to drain back ...very common after sitting a while|
Good luck ...hope this helps
