Question about 2002 Harley Davidson FLHT Electra Glide Standard

Rear end squeak and fuel guage

I have a 2002 FLHT standard with 42k miles on it. Recently the fuel guage started jumping around. Occasionly it will stop moving but as soon as you hit a bump it stars jumping again. I also have a squeak coming from the rear. I had the bearings checked, replaced the exhaust mount bushings, removed the saddle bags, adjusted the belt but I cant seem to find the culprit. It seems to be speed related starting at about 20 mph after I have been riding for a few miles. The rpms or applying the brake dont seem to affect it one way or the other. Any ideas on either issue?

If the squeek is only happening when rolling the throttle then the squeek will be from your drive belt still & you will find that it is still too loose. Try being in a quiet street, do less than 20mph then roll & release throttle a number of times. Make sure Belt is adjusted when the engine is at correct operaing temperatue.

What could be loud rattle at idle or when shifting at low speed? Cause? Cost to fix?

With a bottom-end rebuild, I assume the engine was removed from the frame?

Maybe an exhaust cover is rattling.
Check the mount clamps, and see if any are riding/making contact with something else.

Once I had a right hand muffler that rattled ONLY at idle.
The rubber block (that goes into the lower saddlebag support rail) had "shrunk" and allowed extra movement of the rear of the exhaust system.
Funny how it was only at idle though..............

I have a 2004 FLHT with 64000 miles the bike is still running very strong should I be thinking of doing any engine work to avoid engine failure in the future.

Not unless the engine is smoking, or knocking or something. It depends on what kind of maintenance has been done on the engine. Evidently, the maintenance has been done pretty well. I've torn down Evolution model engines with more miles than this on them and found the bottom ends to be in very good condition not needing a rebuild. Your top end may need a refreshing. It may not even need boring. I'd check the piston to cylinder wall clearance before I bored it. It may just need a new set of piston rings and a valve job. Don't go jumping in rebuilding your engine just because you think it might need it. Ride it until it quits. It won't cost you any more.

Good Luck

My fuel guage does't work. I'm pretty sure its not the sending unit because the low fuel light still works. How can you kow for sure, and how do you change the fuel guage?

Are you convinced the gauge is faulty? if you use a 12 Ohm ressistor from the sender end of the dial to earth, it should show almos if not more than a full tank. If it does, then the guage is OK if it doesn't, make sure there is power to the guage. If there is, change the guage. Replacement is straiaghtforward, what ever you take off, put back. The dials are normally accessed from the rear.

Clutch cable leeks oil

The o-ring around the threaded end where it enters the transmission only keeps the oil from leaking to the outside. If you're getting oil on the inside of your cable, the cable needs replacing. The small oil seal is in the end of the threaded piece that screws into the transmission end cover.

2001 Chevy Impala gas guage incorrect

The level sensor is bad. They are easy to do. You don't have to pull the fuel tank down. There is an acsess hole in the trunk. Look in the rear of the trunk at the rear of the seats. You will notice there is a spot in the middle that the capet comes together, Pull them apart and there is metal plate with some 10mm nuts, pull that off and your fuel pump is there, remove and replace the sensor.
Also there will the a code in the pcm. you will need to clear it to pass emissions

I would check the lower control arm bushings and sway bar bushings for the squeak, and the shaken when breaking means you have warped rotors,if it shakes in the steering wheel its the frt,if the whole car shakes then it usaaly means it is in the rear rotorsor drums.

2003 harleydavidson rear shocks leaking how to check

in the arely forum pages, they say to put soap around the connexctor at the top of the shock. Start with the hoses and check them for cracks. The Harley shocks are known for this problem and is usually in the head of the shcok where the connector installs and can be replaced with new air shock parts for the connector to the shock. Hope this helps. TOm
