Starter clicks won't start after hot

Hi Djgoshen, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to Ignition
5. Starter control circuit, relay or solenoid faulty.
6. Electric starter shaft pinion gear not engaging or over-running clutch slipping.

I'd take my battery to an automotive parts store and have it tested. They'll usually do this free of charge. If bad, replace the battery. The best battery for the money today is Harley's GasMat battery. They don't get any better for the price. Make sure all your connections are tight and clean. This will probably fix your problem.

The chattering and the hot cables sounds like you were not getting enough voltage. You starter is designed to run on 12 DC. Since it's a motor, if the voltage drops, it will pull more current to make up for the low voltage and try to run. The enormous amount of voltage it draws made the cables run hot. The problem is that if the cables got that hot, you can imagine how hot the small wires in the starter got. So, you may be looking at a starter but I'd do one thing at a time. No need to waste time and money if you don't need to. If the battery doesn' fix it, go with the starter.

good Luck

How to wire a starter switch on a Harley Davidson?

You must have a switch on the handlebar. The switch has to be a momentary contact switch. Run a "hot" wire to the switch. From the other side of the switch, run a wire to the trigger contact of a starter relay. The starter relay will have a hot wire coming from the battery and a wire going to the starter solenoid. when you depress the "starter switch" you energize the relay that send voltage to the small terminal of the starter solenoid. If you will contact me directly, I'll scan in a schematic of a 1979 XLH and send it to you. wd4ity@bellsouth.net

2001 HD Dyna FXDP complete electrical shutdown... battery hot, fuel guage & light hot, ignition hot, starter hot... won't turn over, no accessory lights in general. HELP!

Let's see what we have here,
Battery is hot
fuel gauge and light hot
Ignition hot
starter hot
What we don't have
no accessory lights and the starter won't turn the engine over.

I'm sorry but I don't have a schematic for your bike to refer to but usually Harley puts instruments, lights, ignition, and accessories on separate fuses or breakers. Sounds like you've blown the accessories fuse as I think this one controls power to the starter relay. I think your fuses are behind the electrical panel on the left side of the bike.

Starter issues

try tapping on the starter motor/solenoid, it sounds like the solenoind is engaging(the clunk you hear) but the starter is not turning if the wire is getting hot it could be the starter is frozen up.

Harley davidson evo motor wont turn over...just clicks

Pull the spark plugs out and hit the starter. This will make sure that the engine is not locked up. If the starter does not turn the engine, put the bike in first gear and have someone push you, making sure the engine is free. If the engine is OK, your starter is probably jammed and needs replaced. That wire getting hot is a dead giveaway something is locked up tight...starter or engine. If ya have a large hi-performance engine in the bike, chances are your stock starter won't do the job.
