If the battery is good, all connections good, clean tight then sounds like the starter BUT you can test that also.

SOURCE: need to know if my battery or starter is bad.

I would lay odds on the battery if it's six years old but that's guesswork, I prefer mechanics. Take the battery out of the bike and take it to an automotive parts house. Ask them to check the battery with a load test. That will tell the tale.

If the battery is good, what you may be hearing is the starter relay clicking. Since your lights are not dimming, the starter is not even being engaged. The starter relay is a one inch cube device usually black in color. On your '96 model, I think it's on the backside of the oil tank. You must take the seat off to see it. Try to start the bike and see if that's what is making the clicking sound. If so, replace the relay. Check these two things before you go replacing the starter. Starters aren't cheap.

SOURCE: 1991 harley fxstc starter was

You probably have a bad battery. The tell tale is the melted post. The starter is basically a DC motor. In this case,it is designed to run on 12 volts. If your battery has a shorted cell in it making the voltage drop to 10 volts, the starter motor still tries to turn the engine by drawing more current. It draws an extreme amount of current that overheats the battery cable and the battery post. Take your battery out and take somewhere that can "load test" the battery. Connect a volt meter across the battery and push the start button and see what the voltage does. If it falls below 10 volts, the battery is kaput.

Good Luck

Santa fe 2007 wont start makes a single click noise

May be ab bad starter solenoid, or corroded/loose connection at starter, or (ground). Could also be a bad ignition switch. Start from the load; the starter. Test for 12V at starter, OK. Connect short wire from starter and touch sylenoid connection..

Have power to gauges wont start just stopped running starter working acts like no fire

Hi Michel, when checking for spark the CKP needs to measure the compression bump in order to send the correct signal to the ICM/ECM so always check for spark with either a third plug grounded or lift the end of the plug boot 1/2 " off one of spark plugs that are in the head. and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty
2. Fuel supply valve turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded with gasoline as a result of over use of enrichner.
5. Fuel valve or filter clogged.
6. Vacuum hose to automatic fuel supply valve disconnected, leaking, or pinched.
7. Discharged battery, loose or broken battery connections.
8. Loose wire connection at coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, spark plug cable connections loose,
or cables connected to wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to faulty ignition coil, ignition module, or sensors " Manifold Absolute Pressure" "Camshaft Position Sensor" "Crank Position Sensor" "Brake Apply Sensor
11. Engine lubricant to heavy ( winter operation )
12. Sticking or damaged valves or push rod wrong length.
13. Primary cam sproket spline sheared or missing spacer.
14. Security alarm system not disarming.

Won't start...motor "turns over" but starter begins "clicking"

When you press the Start button, the engine will turn over once or maybe twice than then start clicking. Sounds like a bad battery. Take the battery out and take it to an automotive parts store. Ask them to load test it for you. If it's good, check all your connections for a good clean tight connection.

Good Luck

Make sure you have all the wires right. The clicking is your starter not engaging. Was the starter new?Did you bench test the starter before installing it?

When I turn the key my starter just clicks once or twice. Battery has been checked and is good. Battery cables look bad. Your thoughts on why it wont start

the starter has likely failed. have someone "whack' it with a hammer as you turn the key to start it. if it starts you need to replace it as that only works a couple of times

1994 harley softtail custom just bought it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think its whats called the commutator which is the contacts inside of the solenoid on the starter and they need to be cleaned. I've hung around a shop for years and have seen it a million times. Cant guarantee thats the problem but its a good place to start with the sounds of the problem.
