Question about 1999 Aprilia Pegaso 650

1 Answer

Carburetor set up

I've just rebuilt the carbs with new float valves, o rings etc & blasted it out with an air line. The bike now runs lean & coughs & pops when I open the throttle. It revs when choke is on so I presume it needs the mixture setting. Where is the mixture screw & how many turns does it need? Cheers

Since the bike is new, chances are strong that fuel IS the problem.
Also chances are that the carb is perfectly fine. Since the bike is new I'll bet yoy have washed it several times already. The dealer may have washed it also. Fuel is the problem because bikes do not run well on water.

Drain the carb. Remove the water trap bowl on the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Look at the gas in the bowl. Any water in the bottom of the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the petcock. any water in the cup? I am very hopefull this will fix the problem. With a new bike and a clean carb and fuel system not much else should be wrong.

Why does a 2002 buell blast backfire through the carb when given throttle?

Hi, Anonymous popping on deceleration is usually caused by an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and the correct torque applied to the exhaust clamps where present. Coughing is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs of location by a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals. Spitting is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw set to lean. Bike engine races when hot +fuel spills from carb the bike is a stroll 50cc

It sounds like the carburetor needs to be removed and cleaned. While it is apart, inspect the float valve for wear, replace if worn. Also make sure there are no air leaks between the carb and the engine.

Plugged carburetor jets and/or intake leaks can cause lean running and poor idle.

High idle on start up with choke off.

This sounds like an air leak is making the fuel/air mixture too lean. Any air leaks between the carb and the head will lean the mixture. Old, hard and cracked rubber manifold parts are the usual culprits. Old gaskets and "O" ring seals can leak air also. A bad head gasket seal happens at times also, as does an exhaust valve not fully seating. Air leaks are the idle speed problem.

A different problem is likely present in the carbs and that is what is causing the rich fuel smell. The carbs must be balanced. Example > If three of four carbs are perfectly balanced and one carb is not, then the 3 are "driving" the 4th carb. This will cause gas to spit into the air cleaner from the "bad" carb and can cause a backfire or two. Special vacuum gauges are needed to balance the carbs. Also be aware the carbs must be scycronizsed as well. The slides on all four carbs must lift at exactly the same time when the throttle is cracked.

Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx
