Re: wet spark plug
Spark plug gets wet because it's running too cold. Loosen plug and retighten only tight enough so it doesn't loosen from vibrations. Just a tad beyond hand tight is enough. This way the spark plugs heat is not dissipated to the cylinder head and run much hotter burning away any excess fuel deposits.

There could be several reasons. I'd first look at stuck floats in the carbs. I believe there's 3 carbs and if all spark plugs are wet all floats are sticking.
But assuming it didn't overheat, and the spark plugs are wet with fuel (as opposed to water) - sometimes a defective coil will short out only when it gets warm (most time they short all the time). They can be tested.
A very good mechanic once told me there are only four things to concentrate on: Suck, Squish, Bang, and Blow. In other words, Fuel delivery, Compression, ignition system/spark, and proper exhaust. My experience has been that I've never had to worry about Blow (knock on wood) with an outboard. Others have however.
Additional advice: The number 1 cause of outboard problems is gas. Todays fuels are great for fuel injected cars but break down sooner than old gas mixtures. Always put a fuel stabilizer in you tank. It's cheap and only takes a few ounces to protect from hundreds of dollars worth of carb work - and avoid sticky floats.
Larry - the manual isn't really going to help you get this started. Press the primer bulb - if provided a couple of times to get gasoline into the cylinder. You may hear it squirt - or even see it drip from the carburetor. Try starting. If it didn't, remove the spark plug. Is it wet with gasoline? Is the chamber filled with gasoline fumes (you can slowly pull the starter rope to move the piston up and force the air in the cylinder out to smell for gasoline). It wet, dry it throughly. If there is no gasoline odor, give a brief spray of starting fluid or ether into the spark plug opening - and install a new plug - or the clean old one. Attempt to start again. If it tries to start and sputters, you likely have a fuel delivery issue. Make sure the shut off valve at the bottom of the tank or inline on the fuel line is open. If it is, I suspect that the float in the carburetor or needle valve needs to be cleaned / adjusted or replaced. You may want to have this done for you as there are some very small parts involved and attention to detail when re-assembling will be required. Carburetor rebuild kits are available for most of these engines.
Hi, could be a number of things like bad petrol, fouled spark plugs, tank not breathing. I would suggest first that you drain out all the petrol and refill with a decent brand (please, please do not use Supermarket brands). Use Esso this seem to have a much better blend of additives than other brand names. (Both of mine perform very well on this).
Water in the spark plug wells can also give this effect. Remove the spark plug caps and push some tissue down around the plugs if the tissue comes out wet then you need to find out why. For the next step only do this if the tissues come out dry on all spark plug positions.
Remove and check the spark plugs if the electrodes are wet let them dry off and give them a clean. Refit Sparkies and see if the bike will start. If it still back fires fit a new set of plugs and see if this cures the problem. Try to start again only this time open the filler cap on the tank. If this works the breather to the tank is not working, probably the tube is blocked.
You need to check if you have spark and fuel: 1: Remove spark plug and fit it back in the plug cap, crank over to check spark
2:If you have spark check to see if plug is wet or dry (a)If dry, there is a fuel issue and you need to check by the carburettor and tank for fuel and/or any vacuum hoses not connected. (b)If wet you might have a faulty plug or flooded in which case try starting with full throttle and no choke(if Manual choke)
3:If no spark, look for the cutout switch(normally on the right hand side handle bar) to make sure it is on and that there is no water residue on any HT leads etc.
When you try to start it does it make any sounds? Here are the three basic things to check.
Fuel:check to make sure you are full of good quality fuel, try to start the engineseveral times then take out the spark plug and it should look wet. If itsnot wet then you aren't getting fuel into the engine.
Air: remove and clean the air filter with clean gasoline if its made offoam. If its made of paper then you should buy a new one from a localauto parts or hardware store.
Spark: Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug and hold thewire close to the engine block. Try to start the engine and watch for aspark to jump between the end of the wire and the engine block. If itdoesn't then either the wire is bad or the ignition coil is bad. If you get a spark and fuel and air are good,replace the spark plug since it may be damaged.
If you leave gasoline inside tank over long period of time, that will 'gum-up' and ruin carburetor. To prevent problem, put additive in gasoline or empty gas from tank:: under gas tank should be a hex bolt that holds up gas filter > loosen bolt and drain gas.
Starting the engine: Take off air filter and spray WD-40 directly into carburetor. Start engine, engine should fire on the WD-40 accelerant. If engine fires but does not keep running, try spraying WD-40 into carburetor continuously to see if you can keep engine going. If engine stops each time after it no longer gets WD-40, then carburetor is bad or gasoline not getting to carburetor or gasoline is bad. Try fresh gasoline. Do not turn small engine on side or upside down or oil will get into carburetor.
Check gas supply: Go to gas filter under gas tank. Pull loose rubber hose that connects to carburetor and see if gas comes out rubber hose. If gas is flowing to carburetor, then carburetor is gummed up. Small engine repair might suggest 'gum out' or have other suggestions ... but you may need a new carburetor
If engine will not fire on WD-40 If engine will not fire on WD-40 at all, then spark coil may be bad or exhaust port is clogged Check screen that covers exhaust >> is it covered with carbon and dirt or can air pass through it easily? Check spark Remove spark plug Put spark wire back on spark plug Hold spark plug by rubber spark cap so hands don't touch metal part of spark plug Touch spark plug threads against hole where spark plug was removed >>> metal to metal so it conducts electricity Pull start cord and look for sparking between spark plug threads and metal of engine (don't look at the spark gap ... look where metal meets metal If you have no spark, the spark coil is bad >> time for estimate from small engine repair shop or get your part number and order replacement
