SOURCE: Fuel gauge not working, shows

You need to determine if it is in the gauge or tank sending unit.
Remove the tank unit wire, and ground it. Gauge should go to full. If not, then gauge bad. If yes, then tank unit or tank ground is bad. It is basically a wound variable resistor, and the wire often breaks. If you have trouble getting a new one, you can rewind an old one if you are desperate. You can't easily use a voltmeter to trouble shoot because the fuel gauge system uses an oscillator to convert to AC so that there is less chance of spark ignition.

Why won't the fuel gauge work?

The power wire from the sending unit runs to the gauge. Since it is showing 3/4 all the time. It is a break in the wire or really high resistance. I would check resistance of the ground wire first. If it is good(less than 5.0 ohms), I would replace the power wire from the pump to the gauge. I assume the gauge goes to empty with the key off. If not the gauge is bad.

Low fuel light on, fuel gauge shows empty, although I have filled tank up several times.

You need to replace the fuel level sending unit, it is located inside the fuel tank.

You will need to replace the fuel level sensor, this involves the removal of the fuel tank to access the sending unit.

sounds like you probably need a fuel level sender. it's located in the trunk on the right hand side attached to the fuel pump. I got one on ebay for about 20.00, but you might as well replace the fuel pump while you're at it, as it can go bad with time.

Petrol gauge was working fine before a 5 week holiday. Car not used during this time. Now petrol gauge shows tank empty, even after I had filled the tank. What is wrong? How do you fix this?

sounds like the float is either got a hole in it and is full of fuel, or the whole float assembly is seized in the empty position.
was the car left for 5 weeks empty of fuel?
