Driving and speedolight

Is the driving light and speedolight supposed to light when motor is not running? the lights works when the engine is running. and the light increases in strength as the throttle is increased. i have changed the battery. i know that it works. the horn and left/right turnlight works when the engine is not running. same with breaklights.
another fault is that the button-motor-starter doesn't work. i have measured the voltage and everything is correct up to the actually starter, so i guess that is the part i have to replace. Can this be the cause of the other problem?

    when i remove the battery and measure the voltage at the points where the battery should have been connected, the voltage goes from around 1-2V when idle, and increases to 13V at full throttle.


    To me it feels like there is a wire missing or broken between the battery and the lights (and to the starter). but i cant really figure out what. The battery is brand new today, and I have tested it ok.

    as additional information I can mention that i hear the raeile (relé?) tick when i press the starterbutton.


    i will go through the wiring again for the lights.


    Do you know if there is two sets of powercables going to the lights? one from the engine (coil?) and one from the battery?

The driving light and all the 'dashboard' lights are supposed to be ON when the key is turned to RUN--even if engine is not running. (blame federal regulators for this dumb idea. Driving light should be wired to come on when engine is running--a simple wiring connection change.)

the comment 'and light increases in strength' is a key clue. It describes low battery voltage. Either the battery is not properly charged, or it is faulty. First try 'jumping' the cycle with a good car battery. If the started works--proves the problem is low battery voltage.

The alternator is working--but is the voltage regulator controlling the voltage? Try measuring the battery voltage (not driving) but in neutral at various increasing engine speeds. The voltage across the battery terminals, everything off, should measure about 13.2 volts. With engine running, it should quickly rise to 13.5 V at or just above idle, and not rise much/any more as engine speed increases. If it keeps rising to above 14 V , the voltage regulator is not working and will quickly overcharge and destroy your new battery.

    The relay you are hearing when you push the 'crank' switch is the starter solenoid--which is supposed to make the high current connection to the starter motor. THis narrows the problem possibilities.
    0) The wire to the solenoid coil is faulty, not allowing enough current for the solenoid to 'pull in' completely
    1) The contacts in the solenoid are faulty (either eroded away or dirty)
    2) The high current wiring from the battery positive terminal to the solenoid contacts is faulty
    3) The high current wiring from the solenoid contacts to the starter windings is faulty
    4) The starter is defective.

No it is only supposed to run when the engine reaches about 220F to 230F. It could be a sticking fan motor relay or a lack of coolant flow around ECT sensor, which would turn on the check engine light.

is the charge (battery Light on running)
nice photo but do name all lights, i see idle is at 800rpm good.
i see check engine light there, top left. so you need to scan PCM
using any scan tool
that is first.

DRL can shut down for other failures one is charge lamp. on.
if charge lamp is on , do not drive far, or it will stall and battery will discharge and be stranded. (till AAA auto tow is called <jumped)

Engine warning light stays on


Check your gas cap. Whenyou put in gas the motor is suppose to be off. If there's not a good seal on gas cap that will cause the check engine light to come on. The mechanic should have a code reader for you and tell you what the light means.

2002 Grand Marquis headlights won't turn off with switch, won't go out until vehicle is turned off


Might these be "driving lights"?
Cars with "driving lights" have lights that are supposed to stay on all the time the engine is running.
These lights not only look like headlights, in fact some cars even have the headlights themselves come on when the engine is running. Look as some more (several) 2002 Grand Marquis's and see if they are the same.

Headlights are dimmer & heater fan runs slower when its idling. When driving down the road, once in awhile the battery light & brake light come on.


Replace the alternator,it is not charging like it is supposed to.It should read at the battery with the engine running ,and head lights on,and ac on high blower motor setting,13.65 volts,to 14.25 volts,no less.also slow charge the battery to get a deep full charge,cause it will be low .

Check engine light still on after problem fixed


it should reset after a number of drive cycles, how ever to reset it is much easier. while they are trying to reset it have them pull codes and see if anything new was lurking. happy holidays

SC 400 engine light and track light on-but engine runs great


to reset any malfuntion in memory , disconnect the negative battery terminal few minutes
