Question about Yamaha YZF 600 R thunder cat Motorcycles

Ignition lights I have no ignition lights on in my dash, I have the neutral light only and can't get my bike to start,I have checked all the fuses,all are good,I checked the starter relay,it's fine,I have checked the wiring for the oil light and when I bridge out the wiring I can get the light in the dash to come on,would the ECM be the problem?

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
11. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
12. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.
13. Check for engine trouble codes.

Sort of sounds like a Twilight Zone kind of problem doesn't it. I would have the battery checked for an internal dead short. This is something that happens on odd occasions and can happen even to a new battery. Yea, the little lights will work ( they do not draw much juice ), but the starter motor draws a lot of juice and a shorted battery just ain't got it. Also check the wiring harness connections. One loose connection can cause bunches of trouble.

SOURCE: bike wont start/turnover neutral light goes out

Did the starter work when it was jumped by a car battery? If so, the problem is probably the battery in the bike. Take the battery to an automotive parts house and have it tested. Usually, they'll test the battery for free.

What is the CCA of your battery? Those big engines are hard to start and you may not have a battery with enough "Cold Cranking Amps" to turn the engine over. The old Harley Sprint (1973 & '74) was notorious for this. You really had to have a strong battery in that bike for he electric starter to work.

Some bikes have wiring that disables the starter if the transmission is not in neutral. Check on this as well.

There is also a safety switch on the clutch lever that could give the same symptoms.
Another thing to check is the fuse block that has a starter relay built in (hidden) above the fuse compartment. My D5 has the same symptoms and this is the problem. If I keep the starter button depressed for some seconds the relay operates and bike starts.

You either have a broken/disconnected wire or you have a bad starter button. The starter button is a two position switch. Push it in half way and the headlight turns off. Push it in all the way and the solenoid engages the starter. The button is either dirty or broken.

Wit the info you have provided, it might be the ignition switch..- not letting the engine start while jumping the solenoid.. no neutral light.all fuses good,,etc...
Take the switch off and take it to the dealer and have them check it electrically...

Wont start at all


If you have no light you can't even hot wire it sounds like the ignition switch is bad in the start and run positions.

No dash lights no start for 98 breeze


Power runs from battey to starter solenoid , from there to ignition switch and through neutral switch on the transmission shift lever. Tracking down shorts is easiest if you connect a 12v test light across the fuse clips and start disconnecting wires one at a time until the light goes out. But in your case I think a physical exam of the wires to the neutral switch may reveal your problem Good luck!

Had it on the battery charger last night hit the light switch, now i have no neutral light in dash or any power. i checked the main fuse its good. are there any circuit breakers to look for. need help...


You dont say what bike this is? However this is a common problem, locate the starter solenoide, here you will find a red plastic cover, remove it and you should find a 30amp main fuse, this fuse is to protect the circuit but it is a common blow while jump starting or charging the battery with the ignition turned on, (tip always connect battery and or charger with ignition turned off, a spark from electrical devices at the battery can cause the battery to explode)

Starting fault


There are two safety switches that you may need to test. 1) Neutral safety switch- this switch is what tells the bike that it's in neutral and allows the starter to engage. 2) Kickstand safety switch- this switch will not allow the bike to run in gear if the kickstand is down. My initial guess is the neutral safety switch. If the neutral safety switch is bad, then you will not be able to start the bike with the kickstand down because the bike thinks that it's in gear (even if in neutral). This also may explain why the initial intermitent problem of not starting when warm since the metal contacts will expand and possibly not make contact when warmed up. Are you trying to start the bike with the kickstand up or down? If it were the kickstand safety switch, the bike would probably start okay and then die when you put it in gear.

Are all wires clean and with a solid connections? Check the loom. Any abraded wires? Check the operation of the ignition switch with a volt ohmmeter. Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center casing. DickCanFixIt asked good questions. What are the answers?

wont start

i put in a new ignition. now my fuel pump wont ingage and my neutral light wont come on. for some reason my bike will not start or turn over. what is wrong and how do i fix it?

    • i did that they are all fine. we even jumped the starter cylanoid. and all it did was turn. i think it has something to do with the neutral light not coming on.

Will not start or go into nurtal


Anyway'Lets see turn the ignition key on so you have dash lights etc, Jog the bike back and forth gently while trying to shift the gears, what you are looking for is the green neutral light to come on on the dash.If this does not work..'. turn the ignition off..'. jog the bike GENTLY WITH THE CLUTCH IN AND WHILE THE BIKE IS STILL MOVING A VERY small amount release the clutch.'turn the ignition back on.'Now pull the clutch in and again attempt to shift the gears and activate the green neutral light. If you cant shift down, shift up, if the green lite blinks youve shifted thru neutral go back the other way. When you get a green light pull the clutch in and start the bike. Other Problems.'. You may have an airlock in the clutch line Take it to dealer and have it bled or get a knowledgable person to help you bleed the line. Is your battery OK. Is your kill switch activated.
