Looking for the fuel tap. This maybe the reason for too much fuel into the carbs?

86 honda shadow VT500C flat spot in throttle about 1/4 throttle

The carbs are most likely clean, especially if they were soaked in real alkaline carb cleaner. Honda Shadows are very fussy about incoming air. If the air cleaner intake box is not fastened securely to the carburetor intakes the engine will run lean. The reason for the lean mixture is there is not enough negative pressure with the airbox disconnected and the carbs get too much air and not enough fuel.

General tuneup guideline for 98 vt600 honda shadow

Change all fluids. Throw out the old gas, it will be substandard (unless you have a beater car to mix it in). Check the tank for rust. If there is a lot of rust or you locate rust in the carburetor, fix it with an acid solution. Drain the carbs and check for what comes out. You should get at least 100 ml of yellowish fuel/varnish. If that doesn't happen and you don't think the carbs were previously drained (drain screws left open and/or fuel tap set to "off") then the carbs are likely gunked and will need to be removed and cleaned.

Installing carbs

Does it come from the fuel bowl area? Maybe it is just a vent tube for the fuel bowl. Snowmobiles have this kind of setup, just thought maybe its the same.

I need tips on how to drain the fuel from my gas tank and carburater on a 2001 honda shadow vt750dc

draining the tank can be done easiny by syphoning the fuel out with a small diameter rubber tube (about 5mm internal) and the residual fuel can be drained via the tap into a can or drain it all this way if you wish, and the carbs can be drained by turning the fuel off at the tank and running the bike until it stops (this uses all the fuel up in the carbs, great for long storage)
hope this helps

My 1999 Honda shadow backfires on deceleration after steady throttle what could cause this? I have tuned it and cleaned the carb but it still does it.

The most common reason for backfiring is lack of back pressure from changing the exhaust. To compensate for the flat spot you get you put in a jet kit. This leaves the possibility of more unburned gas getting into the exhaust. Honda uses Kei Hin carbs with a fuel shut off diaphragm to help limit this condition (backfiring) by turning off the fuel to the carbs during deceleration. Even stock exhaust can pop or backfire. Typically it is caused by air getting into the exhaust either past the copper o-ring gaskets in the head or leaking muffler connections from the head pipes to the mufflers. Try replacing all the exhaust gaskets and you should minimize this condition.

2001 honda shadow vlx 600 idles fine will not take any acceleration. I have cleaned the carb numerous times changed fuel, float valve and checked float for leaks any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

G'day mate 1st there will be a small gauze filter in the fuel tap ,may also be little gauze at needle and seat in carbs 2nd have you got an air leak , check this by letting the motor idle and spray around the carb where it goes onto the head with WD40/CRC/RP7 style lubricant if it revs up , you got a leak, 3rd remember that a coil will take much more power to rev an engine up than to let it idle . hope this helps

Honda shadow vt600 dumping fuel into the carbs

Hello ddsaul2...If it's only been a day since the shop adjusted the carbs. you need to return it to them and make them do it right.
Sounds like a float valve is stuck and not closeing. They may have cracked a seat... There could be a pin hole in one of the floats causeing it to fill up with gas and sink. You can check and make sure all the vacuum lines are connected and possibly GENTLY tap on the carb fuel bowls to see if the float might be stuck alll the way down. Personally...if i paid for a carb tune i'd make them fix it. Surely they gurantee their work.
Good luck...i hope this helps

My wife has a 750 honda shadow spirit 2003 dc that is leaking gas at the boot that fits from the bottom of the carb. to the front cylindar what is causing it and how do i fix it

This sounds to me like a carb float being stuck open. Turn off the gas and drain the offending carb(s). Next, turn the gas back on and sharply tap the float bowl with the plastic handle of a screwdriver as the fuel bowl refills. The goal here is to vibrate the float to free it up. If doing this process a couple of times does not free the float I would remove the carb(s) and clean with a spray carb cleaner. Clean the air filter then re-mount carb(s). Next Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ). Install an inline fuel filter.

THis should solve the problem.
