SOURCE: tach jumps and pins bike back fires

sound like it could be the control module.. it will cause all these problems..just went through same thing with my sporty..i put aftermarket ignition which eliminated the module and vac. advance and the problem .. way better performance and mileage ..also not sure if yours has the vaccum advance on it for the ign.but if that shorts out will also cause the same problems..it would be located under the tank has wire running to the coil unplug the wire to see if that solves it if so you wil need to replace..will not have max power with this unplugged hope this helps

SOURCE: 93 1200 evo, rough idle,

Sounds like a combination of things. First, are you using high octane fuel? If not, try a couple of tank fulls of that. You mentioned "Power Knocks" when starting off from a complete stop. This is typical of detonation due to low quality fuel.

As for the backfiring and stalling. The engine should idle at about 1000 RPM or so. If it's idled lower thant this, stalling is a possiblity not to mention poor oil of the bottom end. The backfiring could be caused by an air leak into the exhaust system. The mixture in your exhaust system should be overly rich for combustion when you backing down using the engine. If the system is sucking air in at a joint sometwhere, it leans the mixture into a combustable mixture and it ignites causing the back fire. If you've removed the "anti-tamper plug" giving you access to the idle mixture screw, back it out about a half turn and see if that helps.

Good Luck
Steve

1996 Triumph 900 Tach problems

I have a similar problem with mine, but the drop from three to two cylinders only happens when moisture gets into the tach -- the tach itself has been jumping around for years and I pretty much ignored it until now that I'm having the problem. The Tach is connected to a coil, and the moisture appears to short the circuit, preventing the cylinder from firing properly. Perhaps other problems with your tach are causing similar problems with the coil, even in dry weather? I just ordered a new Tach from 2wheelpros.com after shopping around for a while. There may be some aftermarket alternatives for less, but I'm in a hurry to get my bike running again for a charity event, and don't have enough time to look into aftermarket parts and hope they work. I hope this helps -- good luck with yours.

My 1998 Yamaha R1 rev counter is jumping up to 7.500rpm then dropping down to 0, then going back to normal, also it sounds a bit louder than usual. It sounds as if an exhaust gasket may have gone. Any...

Typically Yamaha used the firing cycles off one coil for input to the tach. The noise you hear may be misfiring on one or more cylinders. When tach drops to zero cylinder coil isn't firng, when it jumps up its firing again.
The erratic tach usually means an igniter (ignition black box) problem.
Get a manual and start with testing the pickup coils, they signal the igniter when to fire the ignition coils.
Then test the ignition coils for primary and secondary resistance, check igniter connectors for clean tight connections, full battery voltage supply to igniter etc..
Occasionally getting the igniter wet can cause erratic behavior till it dries out.

when the battery dies ,it takes a little bit time for computer to relearn the values off all sensors.i believe in a little time it should b fine.if the battery is old u should consider replacing it t avoid any further problem.

Bogging

Next time it happens, pop the gas cap and see if the problem stops. Can you hear/feel air rushing in when you open the cap? If you can, you have a clogged gascap vent. You can try to take it apart and and clean/fix the one you got, or just buy a new cap.
