Does the solinoid click when you push the start button ? if yes then check battery is in good condition , check earth connections are clean and all other connections ! it is only a heavy duty type of switch to power the starter ! if all ok then replace solinoid ! check the starter button also !

2003 Suzuki eiger starter button doesn't do anything

With the info you have provided, it seems to point to the ignition switch as the problem. (the clicking you should hear comes from the solenoid contacts - not the starter button). There is probably one wire in the switch that has broken or come unsoldered or other wise not making the right connection.

I got a sportsman Polaris 500 its a 97 ok I got a solenoid and it a universal atv/utv I got fire everywhere except my starter coming from solenoid

Make sure you have at least 12.5v at the battery. Then make sure you are getting the same voltage at the solenoid. You should at least hear a click. If you are getting voltage at the solenoid put your test leads so that you can test for voltage on the wire going to the starter. Make sure your other lead is grounded at the batt. Turn key in, in neutral as if you are going to start and push the start button. You should get a voltage reading. If nothing it is your starter solenoid/relay or button. If you do get voltage time to pull that starter!

Pull the starter, take it apart, give everything a good cleaning, sounds like either the solenoid is hanging or there is a broken return spring

If you heard a click when the starter button was pressed but the starter did not run then the problem most likely lies with the starter solenoid or the starter itself. Check the starter itself by connecting a heavy jumper cable from the positive of the battery to the terminal on the starter motor. If the starter cranks, then the starter is okay and the problem is the solenoid switch.

When performing the above check, first make sure the bike is in neutral or the clutch lever is pulled. When you make the connection with the jumper cable there may be some sparking because the starter draws a lot of amps.

To check the solenoid there should be 3 or 4 terminals on it. There will be one or two terminals that have smaller wire/s attached and there will be two larger ones that have a positive wire from the battery attached and the other one connects to the starter positive terminal. Connect the negative terminal of a dc voltmeter to the bike frame and the positive lead to the terminal on the solenoid with the small wire attached. (If there are two small wires, one of them connects to ground and the other one comes from the starter button.) If you observe 12 volts at this solenoid when you attempt to start the engine the the problem is in the solenoid or starter. Since we already checked the starter then the problem would have the be inside the solenoid switch.

IF YOU DO NOT see 12 volts at the small terminal/s of the solenoid when you attempt to start the engine then the problem is an open in the wiring path between the battery positive and the solenoid switch. This could be the ignition switch, a loose, broken or burned wire, neutral or clutch interlock switch or anything else in that wiring path that is open.

The wiring is simple for a starter. You have a starter solenoid on the bike and a starter relay. When you press the button to start your bike, the button has a wire that runs to the relay. This triggers the coil in the relay and pulls the contacts in. You have three wires that run to the relay for the starter. One hot wire, a trigger wire from the starter button and a wire from the relay to the solenoid. When you press the button, the relay pulls in and makes the wire going to the solenoid "Hot".

The solenoid has three wires going to it. The large battery cable goes to the "long post" of the solenoid, There's another battery cable going to the starter from the bottom of the solenoid, The wire from the starter relay goes to the small terminal of the solenoid. The small wire from the starter relay is the trigger wire for the starter solenoid. When this wire goes hot, it magnetizes the solenoid and pulls the plunger inward. The plunger bridges two large contacts in the solenoid to put high current voltage to the starter.

If you push the starter button and the solenoid clicks , the button is good. Open the electronics box and jump the solenoid, if the starter works you have a bad solenoid. If you tap the starter while holding the starter button and the starter works, you need new brushes. If you pull the starter and the armature is shorted, the coils are burnt, or the inside of the starter is corroded or wet, replace the starter.

99 road king classic won't start. Makes loud clattering sound when start button is depressed. Put in new battery, cleaned all connections, installed new start relay and still the same problem. Getting 12.7...

Since you installed a new battery and starter relay and cleaned all the connections, can't be but one thing left, the starter. Check the voltage at the battery. When you depress the start button, it shouldn't drop below 11 volts. If it drops to the 1-2 volts you mentioned, you've got a bad battery even if it is new.

If you're checking the voltage at the small green wire at the starter with it connected, you may be getting a bad reading. Unplug the wire and then check it. Should be 12 volts or better.

The starter is a Nippondenso starter. The starter motor is the "round part" on the bottom and the solenoid is the "pentagon shaped" part. When you depress the start button, the voltage pulls in the plunger in the solenoid. Once it's pulled in, the voltage holds it in. There is a coil inside the solenoid called "the hold in coil" that does just that. If it's not doing it's job, the plunger will be pulled in only to allow it spring back and then be pulled in again only to spring back and on and on. The plunger running very quickly in and out causes a loud clattering noise. It may be time for a new starter. They can check it out for you at your local shop.

There is a way to "Test" your starter motor. On the back of the starter there is a pentagon shaped plate that is held on by three small screws. Remove the plate and you will see the plunger of the solenoid. Make sure the bike is in neutral or you're in for a real shock. Take a large screwdriver and push the plunger inward until the contacts make. Your engine should turn over and it will start if the ignition switch is on. You don't need the switch on to do this test though. If the bike is in gear, it's going to lurch forward so make sure it's in neutral. This test will verify that everything else is good only the solenoid is bad. Problem is, you have to buy the starter complete unless you want to do the work to change everything out. I think you can order just the solenoid but you'll have to swap all the "guts" out the old starter into the new solenoid.

Open the electronics box and jump the solenoid . If the starter works you have a bad solenoid. If you hold the starter button and tap on the starter, and the starter works , you need starter brushes. If the starter has burnt coils, has a shorted armature , or is wet inside, you need a new starter.
