Yamaha Virago Cutting out in the wet

My Virago xv125s keeps cutting out whenever it rains! In the dry its perfect. Thought it was carb at first but mechanic has checked that and filters and leads and sparks and cannot find anything wrong even after complete service.

Hi,

I had the same problem with mine. Its a dodgy ignition coil i found a spray of wd40 on it would fix it for a while by driving out the moisture. I've since put a piece of plastic bag around it which helps alot. Should really give in and buy a new coil though

This happened to me when water used to get to my battery, this was due to poor fairing design, however i recently customised the battery housing , its now water proof and ive also gone around all the male/female connectors i could find and water proofed them with electrical tape just to be safe. Ive since ridden in the rain with no problems.

97 yamaha virago 535... fuel pump wont suck fuel... but if i soak the tip of the filter in to a bucket w/ gasoline,,it sucks perfectly fine... but when i connect it again to tank,,no fuel is flowing on the...

check that the non return valve in the pump is not stuck open from being dry It allows the fuel to drain back and the diaphragm has trouble sucking up fuel. It may be best to re-kit the fuel pump or replace it.

I had this problem today with my bike and after much ado I discovered there was oil in the air filter box... check your oil level it could be too full. Mines was and the excess oil was blown into the air filter box and as a result contaminated the air filter. Spent today cleaning the filter box, carb and draining and changing oil, could not get a new air filter today so ran it without onebike runs like new!! New air filter will be here Monday!

Yamaha Virago 535 2003 dies splutters, backfires, loss of power when riding in the rain. If left a while it will sometimes re-start even though still in the rain

Hi, E and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking check for spark leakage in the dark
5. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
6. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
7. Loose, dirty, or corroded ignition module connector at crankcase.
8. Faulty CKP or CMP, MAP, ETS, ATS, TPS, O2 sensor.
9. Dirty air filter.
10. Intake air leak.
11. Water, dirt, or rust in the fuel system.
12. Carburetor damaged, contaminated, sticky float, plugged jets.
13. Fuel filter clogged.
14. Old or contaminated fuel.
15. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carb vent line closed off.
16. Gas cap diaphragm valve faulty.
17. Vacuum line from intake manifold to fuel valve is broken, cracked, pinched, or missing.
18. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
19. Incorrect valve timing.
20. Valve springs floating, weak, or broken.
21. Damaged intake or exhaust valve.
22. Incompatible performance parts.
23. The control module may be in "LIMP" mode.
24. Check for engine trouble codes.

sounds like water in fuel, check fuel for water,or just drain and put fresh fuel in,drain float bowl for any water that may have entered carb, check air box/filter for water, also pull spark plug if wet and fire it may be more moisture than fuel,if there is a fuel pump check that also, may sound like alot to do,but at least you will no there is no water in fuel, had same problem myself.(water is heavyer than fuel).

Hi, Kris1353 if your bike has been sitting idle for months or years and you did not do any pre-storage maintenance I feel your pain it will probably have a dead battery and not want to start or if it starts it will idle and run poorly then stall, here are the following steps necessary to complete in order to get your bike back to an acceptable running condition.
1. If your battery was 2-3 years old when you last had the bike running you should replace it.
2. If you believe your battery might still be serviceable remove it from the bike and put it on a 1 or 2 amp trickle charger for 24 hours. If it is the old lead acid type with visible cells and acid levels fill each cell to the top line with distilled water and replace the caps, run the vent tube into a plastic or styrofoam cup, any cells that are cloudy/milky replace the battery.
3. After charging remove the leads and let the battery sit for a couple of hours then check the battery voltage with a volt meter, you should have 12.5 volts or better, any readings in the 11 volt range you need to do a proper load test on the battery and replace as necessary, any readings in the 10 volt range you have a dead cell and the battery needs to be replaced.
4. Drain and flush fuel tank, google " how to clean a motorcycle gas tank" find a couple forums to view the different options available.
5. Remove and inspect your air cleaner paper elements that are not oil soaked can be cleaned with a soft brush and low pressure compressed air, oil soaked elements must be replaced. Gause mesh and foam elements can be cleaned by soaking them in a container big enough to completely cover them with a solution of 1 gallon of water and 1 oz. of Dawn dishwashing liquid for small and medium size elements, for monster size double the formula and let soak for at least one hour then rinse with warm water shake off excess and let air dry, "WARNING" do not use compressed air as this will embed micro-sized dirt and road grime and destroy the mesh pattern and stretch foam elements out of shape just squeeze it like a sponge and let air dry, use a fan if you're in a hurry. When completely dry spray a very fine mist of air filter oil evenly around the whole element.
6. Remove the carburetors, disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air
7. Remove fuel valve and filter disassemble and clean as necessary, remove, clean, and inspect fuel and vacuum lines and replace as necessary.
8. Replace spark plugs with new ones and check for spark.
