First clean carbs, slow and main Jet also, if 1 (or 2nd) cylinder is not getting enough fuel, it will back fire. 2nd, if you change pipes to a custom opened ones, you have to sync the carbs, if that is not possible (to sync carbs), you have to change slow and main jet 1up.

SOURCE: 2002 400XR hard to start and will only run well with choke on

hello
it sounds like a jet has become plugged. the popping is generally associated with a lean condition. in your case it seems the pilot jet is plugged. this is very common because the pilot jet is a very small orifice and is apt to plug and cause bad low throttle or idle conditions. removeing the float bowl and takeing out the pilot jet and cleaning it or replaceing it should solve your problem. this also will help with the cold starting conditions. thank you.

SOURCE: 98 CBR F3 doesn't stay running w/o choke on

There seems to be fuel starvation to the carbs.
Check the fuel filter and the petcock, not bad too to clean the carb/s.

SOURCE: i have a honda shadow areo 1100 the bike starts

You will have to check the carbs it seems the gas isn't flowing in freely into the float chamber and filling it up.

SOURCE: will not idel once warmed up stalls out if chocke

With only 1145 miles on your bike, it has obviously been sitting a lot. What has happened is the gasoline that was in the carburetors has evaporated and left behind some varnish which has plugged up the very small openings in the carb jets and other passageways. The carburetors need to be disassembled and cleaned out. This will fix the problem, every time.

I got my carburetor problem fixed but now it runs for a while then starts backfiring it'll shut off let's set for a couple seconds and start right back up can anybody tell me why

That sounds like a fuel/air mixture problem.

Just to confirm .. it is a carburettor, not fuel injection?

As a general rule of thumb (with carburettors..) if it backfires through the exhaust/muffler .. the fuel mixture is too rich.

If it backfires through the carb/air filter, the mixture is too weak.

It could also be a 'sticking' float in the carb.

When an engine is cold the fuel is rich .. lots of fuel .. that's how a choke works.. However, when the engine warms up a rich mixture causes problems. The car may splutter and stall, run sluggish or cut out.

After start it backfires, sputters then runs

Hi,when starting bike you put the chock on,remeber this is to make a richer mixture for cold start,so when you start the bike put put the choke off a little bit as it warms up,other wise wat you are doing is couseing it to floud,so again as the bike warms up put the choke off little bit at a time, all the best.

Loss of power when in gear

Sounds like the carb is frozen or the ignition timing is way out (check distributor and loosen the clamp, turn it slightly with the engine running until it idles and revs up nice) . Reset the ignition timing, if that does not cure it, a carb rebuild is on the cards.

Vote for me if this helps, thanks.

I had a high performance pipe on my bike, it got damaged, put stock pipe back on and it ran fine for a couple of months, it started to backfire at idle and with throttle off but still had plenty of power. ...

I would take a close look at the valves, if you are sure the carb is entirely clean. (Accelerator pump and everything)
A closed up exhaust can harm an exhaust valve.
Start with a compression test.
Good spark?
Is the plug wet?

Last time I STARTED MY VSTAR 1100 I CHOKED IT FOR 10 SECONDS ON HIGH THEN MOVED TO MEDIUM CHOKE FOR 4 THEN TOOK OFF AT NO CHOKE. 2 WEEKS LATER. I started up bike Choke on high bike barely wanted to idle...

Sounds like your flooding it out with the choke out. Try the next time you go to start the bike when it's cold with the choke out and when it starts push the choke all the way in and keep it running with the throtle. If it runs better after doing this then your flooding it on start up. Use 1/2 choke to start cold and see what it does. Good Luck

Backfires

had a similiar prob with a triumph. It backfired at low revs, a delay between throttle opening and revs increasing and bike felt like it wanted to stall at low speeed. Got the Carbs cleaned to find out the problem was infact Failing Ignition coil. Get those checked first before commiting to replacing other parts.
