1999 kawsaki zx7 idles great, great power in 1rst 2nd and third gear but after it is in 4th gear it tops out at 7000 rpm

What kind of oil are you using? mine was like that when i ran it on motul 20w50.. stopped when I went back to 10w40.

Sounds more like worn dogs on your 2nd gear...bleeding clutch is the same as the brakes...make sure there is fluid in the master and bleed from the slave cyl nipple down by the front sprocket casing

I was towing and the hud said hot transmission fluid bring engine to idle. I pulled over and let the tranny cool but since then the trucks shift pattern has changed. First revs to 5000 rpm before changing...


your transmission oil is likely burnt,there by losing it's viscosity. check for brown rather than red fluid on dipstick.have transmission oil & filter changed.it is possible overheating will have caused additional damage.

Hang up in third gear loss of power


Hi All

I have a s40 1.9d / 2000 plate,
In the last month or so the car loses revs when changing up to 3rd and 4th gear, I can only get 50 mph max in 3rd gear 80mp in 4th.
The car has just clocked 185,000 miles
Its a great car but a pai at the moment, I've had a service including fuel fillter change added fuel cleaners to the deilsel all to no avail

When pushing down on the gas in 3rd 4th and 5th gear has a small


Valves need adjusting and/or oil in the engine

With such limited information i can almost put my thumb on it being the valves - they are compressed using special tools, aka - leave it to the pros and save yourself a headache!

(In 1rst and 2nd the engine rpm is low, in 4th and 5th it is much higher making the knock more noticeable)

I have just bought a 51 plate a3 1.8. Sometimes it wont go into third and fifth gear as it should. When trying to change into these gears it doesn't crunch it just won't let you put it in gear. The best...


The possiblities that come to mind are
1 Bad synchro in transmission 2 bad bearing(s) in transmission input shaft.   3 Bent shift linkage or shift fork (I doubt this, but it's possible)
Only number 3 is relatively cheap.  I'd go back to where/who you bought the car from, if it was that way when you bought it, and ask them to help.  It can't hurt.

Using force is NOT the solution.  If the syncros are bad, until you get them replaced, you'll be better off to determine the RPM difference between 2&3 gears (maybe 800-1000?) and also 4&5 gears (maybe 500-800?) and learn to put a modest amount of effort at exactly the time the rpms fall into that diffference.  
Example Say the difference between 2nd gear at 3500 RPM and 3rd gear is 1000 RPM, then when you take it out of 2nd for an upshift to third,  delay until the RPMs are just getting to 2500. If you are on a budget and can't fix the transmission (it's going to be big bucks) you may find you can get pretty good at this.    It is possibly to shift a car this way without even using the clutch, although I don't recommend this and it takes a great deal of practice and luck.
While you have this problem, don't downshift into 3rd,  just run the RPMs down in 4th (say to 2000 or less) until you can shift into 2nd at an acceptable RPM. The least amount of shifting you can do until you resolve this the better.
Another choice until you can fix it, is to just run up the RPMs in 2nd and then shift to 4th, and then forget you have a fifth gear.  This is much better than forcing, it's possible to do more damage by forcing. 
Is it hard to get into 3rd from 4th AND 2nd?

did you check for vacuum leaks? vacuum leak will cause a higher rpm , and some use vacuum to shift transmission,

ummm i would say you need to adjust your trans shift cable, check your fluid level, and the problem i had with my dodge was similar to yours... it was my 3rd-4th actuator spring, it had broke and couldnt hold the pressure to keep it in gear

1rst 2nd and 3rd are good when i go to 4rth and gas it it stumbles and looses speed rappitly


open the gearbox ,
you have to know all the gear off the 4th gear,
first clean all and inspect parts closely after removeal. Check shaft snap ring grooves for wear and damage.
inspect all gear teeth closely for signs of wear,
chipped teeth
check synchronisers
