Hi, Anonymous before testing any electrical component in the Starting System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand, clutch, neutral safety switch.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid, starter motor or circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. Faulty ignition relay.
14. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
15. Check for engine trouble codes.

I had the same problem with my 636. It turned out to be just a cable problem. Try to see if all the electric cables work correctly and connected.

SOURCE: press starter button and hear click sound from

Follow the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. If you jump the two cable terminals on the solenoid and the starter cranks, you have a bad solenoid. If you hold the starter button and tap the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works, you need new starter brushes. Any other problem with the starter and you will need to buy a new assembly.

Why doesn't the engine turn over?

The starter is not engaging or the spark plug is missing. Try tapping (not hammering) the body of the starter with a wooden object like a hammer handle. If you use a metal object like the head of the hAMMER YOU WILL CRACK THE CASE OF THE STARTER AND RUIN IT. sorry about the caps lock, I don't feel like going back and correcting... Just a bit of tappy tapping might do the trick. Have a friend turn the ignition switch so you gat easily tappy tap the starter. Capische?

your starter button has a short or bad (dirty) connection. try using a multi-meter an test the ohms. first the test the amount of voltage crossing the switch.

You will need to remove your starter and have a look inside, most bike starters contain " Planetary " gears which disintegrate with use .

Sometimes my honda will not stop with the push

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

On the "...light click..." and no start, initially:
  • externally charge the battery;
  • install and try again and start the bike:
  • if no click heard, try with the clutch lever pulled in and/or the sidestand folded up. If it starts, then safety interlocks need to be checked;
  • if there is click but will not start, follow the big cable from the battery's + terminal;
  • it would end in the starter relay;
  • press on the start button;
  • determine if the click is coming from the starter relay;
  • short the two big cables/terminals;
  • if the starter motor spins, then faulty starter relay;
  • if not, then fault starter motor, most likely, the carbon brushes.
Postback results of checks/tests.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

1981 honda goldwing wont start

while trying to start an engine, and only the solenoid clicks, there are these 3 things- no juice from the battery, starter corroded contacts(the big cables) or starter is shot. so first make sure the battery is charged, next make sure the cable mounts from battery to starter are clean(no rust), if that is all good and doesnt start , remove starter and have it tested.
