1988 Honda GL 1500 Gold Wing hard to start

This is a fuel injected bike and i have to pump the gas to start and when it finally starts you cant touch the gas untill warmed up then its fine and it starts fine when its warmed up

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or have an improper gap or are partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition.
3. Battery damaged or nearly discharged, should have 12.5 volts.
4. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Throttle controls not adjusted correctly.
6. Water or dirt in the fuel system.
7. Water or dirt in the carburetor.
8. Intake air leak.
9. Fuel tank vent hose and vapor valve plugged, or fuel line closed off, restricting fuel flow.
10. Choke valve inoperative.
11. Engine lubricant to heavy (winter operation).
12. Ignition is not functioning properly (possible sensor failure).
13. Faulty ignition coil.
14. Valves sticking.

SOURCE: does the 1989 Honda GL 1500 Goldwing have a water pump.

Well, this is a water cooled bike. Few things can cause this:
1.) Low water in radiator.
2.)Dirty blocked clogged radiator fin openings, or clogged inner radiator with rust and sludge.
3.) Electric coolong fan not working- could be temp sensor, fan relay or fan motor itself.
4.) Worn radiator pressure cap.

SOURCE: 1985 goldwing limited edition fuel injection

Firstly the 85 ltd doesnt have carbs its electronic fuel injection.
Could be the throttle postition sensor, vaccum lines running to the efi, or the banks need to be balanced. Simplest thing to check first is that your throttle cable is acutally pulling the throttle body wide open. Decarbonizeing the throttle body may help also. and I run can of sea foam thru my ltd about once every two months to keep injectors etc clean.

The bike may be discharging the battery. you need to test stator output,voltage regulator,and the fuses. Does the battery need to be recharged to restart?

I started the engine, but then after a minute it started to lose power and stopped. I opened the choke fully, started it again but it failed shortly after, and would not start again

I agree it's probably got a problem with the fuel pump.if it started with choke then cut out soon after its a fuel problem either no fuel fuel blockage or faulty fuel pump

96 gold wing 1500 changed the oil and filter started bike once now will not start

Check you kill switch. Changing oil should have nothing to do with starting. Changing fuel filter is recommended. Could be a fuel pump problem. Is fuel pump getting power. Check fuel pump relay and or fuse and find any connector in the wiring that feeds the pump and inspect. Could also be an ignition problem. To bettet answer, I would need more info.

I have a gl 1500goldwing i smell gas when i park it for about an hour or so bike runs fine cant see gas anywhere help plz

Definetly sounds like one of your carbs is overfilling due to a stuck needle valve or even a leaking fuel pipe

Why is my 1988 1500 so hard to start new plugs , new fuel pump ,new filters , and carbs redone

Without the benefit of actually being able to look at a few things on the bike, I can only give you an idea. Since everything is new, there are two areas that could be a problem. The areas are in the fuel and compression areas.

I see you said that you had the carbs redone but the Gold Wing carbs have a reputation for not holding up very well. The carbs may have be rebuilt but they still might not be in the best shape. One other thing, since the bike uses an enricher system to start the engine instead of a choke, try starting the bike with the enricher on and the throttle fully closed. Some people try to "crack" the throttle when using the enricher circuit and this negates the purpose of the enricher. Leave the throttle completely closed and try that. Make sure the enricher works on both carbs too.

Next, you didn't say how many miles you have on the bike. Did you have a compression test run on the engine? If you have worn rings, a cam timing belt that is stretched, or valves that are not seating very well, you could be suffering from low cranking compression. This is cranking compression down around 50 psi or so. This is caused by the compression leaking down at the slow piston speeds when you're trying to get the engine started. Once started, the engine will run rather well but getting it started is a job. It might be time for a top end rebuild with new rings, cam drive belt, and valve job.

Backing up with reverse gear bike just stopped. It seems now like the transmission is in gear, but won't shift. The reverse lever is stuck in the engaged position, and I finally had to shut it off and now...

Pull out on the lever and push it toward the front of the bike, hard if necessary. Rock the bike while pushing. If the bike comes out of gear it should start. The bike will not start while the lever is up.
Probably need to replace the switch behind the lever. Don't test it, just replace it.
