Engin dies when stoping, after long ride, sometimes a short ride.

99 eclipse 2.0 N/A erratic idle, low idle , sometimes doesn't even idle when started it just dies unless you give it fuel. Have replaced throttle position sensor 6 times. What else can cause it?


If check engine light is on get the codes. The best that can be done is a guess without them my best guess would be idle air control motor (IAC).

Won't idle


I would check the IAC stepper motor plunjer (idle air control). Dirt can build up on the plunjer and the air canal and will disturbe the idle control. The IAC sits on the throttle body.

Hi Elmer, I'm glad to help! Elmer there are a lot of things that can cause a dieing problem. FIRST, see if it will stay running if you push the gas pedal a little bit then crank it. If it runs and stays running but dies when you release the pedal then here are a few things you can check. (1) You may have an "IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR" sticking and is stuck in the closed position. SOMETIMES this works, take sometime and tap on the motor and if it starts idling properly replace the motor. (2) You could possibly have a "THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR" that bad and does not signal the engine controller that the engine is at idle so it dies. If you can get it to idle then tap on the TPS when its bad it will idle the engine way up while tapping on it. If it does then replace the TPS. (3) You could also have a FAULTY or DIRTY "MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR" If the vehicle has one, some do some don't. If your vehicle is equipped with one, you can take it off and try cleaning the air flow sensor inside it. If it idles properly your good to go. If it doesn't idle properly I wouldn't rule out the sensor being bad. (4) You could possibly have a vacuum leak, vacuum leaks cause all kinds of crazy problems because it confuses the engine controller. If you can get it to idle, then you can take parts cleaner and spray around the intake manifold and if it dies right away then you have a vacuum leak that needs to be repaired. (5) You could have fuel issues, BUT, if the engine runs good while driving it down the road then you can rule this one out. These are the most common problems that occur and cause dieing problems. Cheque for disconnected vacuum hoses. sometimes this happen after working around the engine, if everything looks good, start the engine press down the accelerator pedal keep the engine running about 2500 rpm for 3 minutes then let the engine idle, if the engine idle this means you need a new idle speed control motor, if the engine still dies most probable the fuel pump it's going out if you have a code reader it's possible you have some codes and this can give a good direction

It could be the mass air flow or manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) ; usually has just one or the other. The idle air control valve can also cause this. Sometimes the O2 (oxygen) sensors can cause this as well. If it runs fine going down the road then I would check the Idle Air Control Valve first.

Check A.I.S./I.A.C. motor on throttle body. Known by both names, Automatic idle speed motor (AIS) Idle Air control (IAC) . Usually mounted on side of throttle body, with 2 or 3 torx screws and it's job is to adjust idle at all times as necessary, such as when AC on, turning, etc when extra load on engine, it will increase idle as needed to overcome the load and maintain proper idle speed. You can often remove the motor and clean pintle (pointed end that goes inside throttle body) with throttle body spray cleaner as well as spray inside the port (hole) that it comes out of. Sometimes this will cure the problem for quite a while, but if only for a short time, and it happens again, replace it.

I am not saying 100% this is your problem because this is a fairly expensive part however your symptoms are classic IAC failure. Idle is too low, car dies, engine runs fine


An IAC (idle air control) motor is designed to adjust the engine idle RPM speed by opening and closing an air bypass passage inside the throttle body. The car computer or ECM (electronic control module) receives information from various sensors and will output signals to adjust the IAC motor in or out to adjust engine idle speed by controlling engine idle air.
An IAC motor is highly susceptible to carbon and coking build up; if an IAC goes too long without cleaning it can cause stalling and poor idle quality. Some cars are designed with a large vacuum transfer hose that connects the intake manifold to the IAC (idle air control) motor. If a broken or dilapidated these vacuum lines can cause the engine to lose vacuum which will allow the engine to run rough and die. 
Inspect all engine and accessory vacuum lines to look for missing, torn or dilapidated lines and replace as needed. To check the IAC motor remove the unit, with the wires connected turn the key to the "on" position without starting the engine, the IAC should move in or out. 
If the IAC motor does nothing it has probably failed, replace it with a new unit and recheck system. Note: while the IAC motor is removed clean (use aerosol carburetor cleaner) the passages the IAC uses to control idle air speed.
