Get a paperclip or a short piece of still wire. Put your fingers behind the side stand and trace to 2 wires from the switch. They will go to a little plug behind the side cover. Unplug the plug from the socket and 'jump' the plug with the wire. make sure you jump the right side, jump the side going into the harness, not the switch side. Don't leave it 'jumped' for ever. You might have a mishap if you ride off with the side stand down. This is more a temporary fix / bodge to get you home.

Triumph trident 93 model side stand works as it should but warning stays on with stand up john

Hi, John either the switch is faulty or the circuit is grounded to the light that being said the ignition circuit cut-off system comprising of the side stand switch, clutch switch and neutral switch has the following functions:
a. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is up, but the clutch lever is not pulled.
b. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the clutch lever is pulled, but the side stand is still down.
c. It cuts the running engine when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is moved down.
Periodically check the operation of the ignition circuit cut-off system according to the following tests.
With the engine turned off:
1. Move the side stand down.
2. Make sure that the engine stop switch is set to "RUN"
3. Turn the key to "ON".
4. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
5. Push the start switch if the engine does not start the neutral switch may be faulty.
With the engine still running:
6. Move the side stand up.
7. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
8. Shift the transmission into gear.
9. Move the side stand down if the engine does not stall you may have a faulty side stand switch.
After the engine has stalled:
10. Move the side stand up.
11. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
12. Push the start switch if the engine does not start you may have a faulty clutch switch.
This check is most reliable if performed with a warmed-up engine.

I wired my Yamaha virago and now it only starts, but when I put it in gear it shuts off.please help !

Sounds like a problem with the side stand safety switch (will kill engine if side stand is down or switch is reading faulty) can bypass the switch bye connecting the two wires together completing the circuit but use caution it will now also start in gear and possible take off

Scn@bike will start, but with the side stand up and clutch pulled in when 1st gear is selected the engine stalls/stops

That is a safety deature. It would not be a good idea to ride off with the side stand down!
There is a micro switch connected to the side stand and clutch lever for your protection.

1987 honda 600, starts fine, as soon as you try to get it in gear stops, thought was clutch, but with motor off, 1st gear with clutch applied the bike can be pushed easily.... what it can be? electrical?/

IT MAYBE THE SIDE STAND SAFETY SWITCH HAS GONE FAULTY, COMBINED WITH A SWITCH ON THE CLUTCH LEVER, IT IS DESIGNED TO SAVE YOU RIDEING OF WITH THE STAND DOWN CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STOP WHEN YOU SELECT A GEAR, I WOULD 1STL CHECK THE WIRES LOCATED CLOSE TO THE CLUTCH LEVER FOR CONDITION AND CONECTIVITY, SECONDLY CHECK THAT THE SWITCH LOCATED BY THE SIDE STAND IS NOT STICKING IN WITH DRY GREASE OR DIRT, WITH THE STAND IN THE UP POSITION GENTLY PULL THE PLUNGER OUT ALL THE WAY TILL IT STOPS, START THE ENGINE AND SEE IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS, YOU COULD THEN TRY DISCONECTING THE SWITCH AND BRIDGING THE WIRES LOOM SIDE.TO ELIMENATE THE SWITCH

Adjusted clutch freeplay now bike dies when put in gear what happened

There are two switches to check. The first one is at the clutch lever. Its there to stop you driving away if the side stand is down. It works by stalling the engine when you select gear. The other switch is down at the side stand itself. Hope this helps.

It dies when i put it in gear

Could be a problem with the side stand switch (when you select a gear it cuts the engine if the stand is down). Check the switch connetions located near the top of the stand. You can bypass the switch by linking the wires, but may need a circuit diagram for the bike to confirm.

Most of the safety systems use a diode pack in the loom to stop clutch and side stand switch etc from back feeding each other. Maybe this has failed. If not could it be in the loom, a broken or shorted wire. Look for a tight bend in the route the loom runs and external damage to the tape.
