Did you have the front wheel off recently?
The speedometer sensor is easily broken and a common occurrence when the wheel is removed and replaced.
The symptoms are erratic or non-working speedo.

How long should it take to tear a suzuki boulevard m50 down to replace the timing chain

There are two cam drive chains. They rarely need replacing. There is a tensioner device on each cylinder to adjust the tension in the chains. All of the tensioner devices are different so take it to a shop and get them reset.
