Question about 1980 Suzuki Gs 550 L
The choke is off and the throttle is responsive, but won't drop lower than 6000 rpm. Idle screw has no effect. When I had the carbs off, everything looks like it's working right.
Had the bike apart 3-4 weeks to replace a couple gears and this problem happened once I started it back up.
When you replaced the gears you removed the carbs. The rubber parts between the carb and the cylinder are old and hard and when removed probably now have some cracks that are letting in extra air to mix with the fuel. The fuel/air mix is lean. That is why the bike has a rev problem. The manifold clamp surfaces, "O" ring seals, old gaskets and rubber manifold ducts are the usual culprits. A leaking head gasket can **** in air as can bad seats on exhaust valves. Replace all seals, gaskets and rubber intake ducts to eliminate the leaks. The head and valves are probably okay since it was running good prior to the tear down.
A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks! < < And it doesn’t cost anything extra!

You have a vacuum leak most likely. Check the carb boots first, then the lines off the carbs. You may be missing the caps for the vacuum connections also. Make sure your slides are returning to their rest postion also.

I just had this problem. Try and adjust your main jet. it might be open a bit explaning why the throttle still works and no need for a choke but if you choke it it dies.
