This thing suxs

Right about 1 quart (give or take about and fluid ounce or two).

Two ways to judge:

1: hold bike upright, remove derby cover (over clutch pack).
Pour primary fluid through derby cover hole until level comes up to just the bottom of the clutch plates.

------------------------OR-------------------

2: With bike on kick stand, pour fluid through derby cover opening until level is just below the derby cover opening.

I need 2 do oil changes on my 97 Dyna Low Rider. 1. Type and amount of oil for engine? 2. Type and amount of oil for clutch / transmission? Thanking you. Spy.

Your engine holds three quarts of oil, 20W50 petroleum or synthetic.

Your Primary holds about a quart of oil. Stand the bike straight up and fill up to the lower edge of the outer clutch basket through the derby cover access. Do not overfill or the clutch will drag. H-D primary and transmission lubricant.

Your Transmission holds 20-24 ounces of the same H-D primary and transmission lubricant. Stand the bike up straight, remove the plug from the chrome end on the right side of the transmission that takes a large hex key to remove. Level should be between the lines on the dipstick.

As for what brand of lubricant, there are many of them on the market that are sufficient to do the job. I stick with H-D lubricant for the primary and transmission. I like H-D, Mobil V-Twin, or Amsoil for the engine. Whatever brand you choose, check their website for suitability and their recommendations.

Good Luck

How much primary chain oil is needed in a 1997 wide glide and the best way to put it in

Ok here is the spec for primary oil, if you take off the clutch inspection cover and look inside, you will see a metal or silver ring around the clutch, look closely inside, this will be your spec.

Once you locate this ring around the clutch, put the bike upright and level, and start filling the primary from where the clutch is. Once the fluid reaches the bottom of this ring with the bike upright and level, you have just reached the spec.

It should be about 1 quart.

I usually just put in a quart.

Remove primary cover 1990 sportster

To remove your primary cover, first, disconnect the battery and drain the oil from the primary. Then, remove any footpegs or shifter mechanisms that might be in the way.

Look on the bottom of the primary cover and you'll see a bolt and locknut. This is the primary chain tensioning device. Loosen the locknut and turn the screws out (downward) to loosen the chain.

Then take the derby cover off. Remove the spring and the locknut from the clutch adjusting mechanism. Remove the bolts that hold the outer primary on. Turn the clutch adjuster screw clockwise as you remove the cover.

When you replace the cover, turn the clutch adjuster screw counterclockwise until it stops. Put all the bolts back in the cover and tighten them. Turn the screw counterclockwise again until it stops and then back off 1/4 turn. Install the locknut, the spring, and the derby cover.

Remove the upper inspection cover and reach in with your finger and check the primary chain tension. Using the bolt on the bottom of the primary, turn it upward (inward) and tension the primary chain to between 1/2" and 5/8" up and down play. Reinstall anything else that was taken off and pour in one quart of primary lube. Reconnect battery.

Good Luck

Is it hard to change the primary gasket on my sportster

No, just drain the primary. You'll have to take anything like shifters, foot pegs, and other stuff that might be in the way off the bike. Then, go underneath the primary cover and loosen the locknut of the primary chain tensioner and turn the screw downwards to remove the tension for the tensioner. Now, take the derby cover off and remove the spring and the locknut. Take the bolts out of the cover and then turn the clutch ajuster inwards as you pull the cover off. The cover will come off.

Then to install the cover, hold it up to the clutch adjuster and turnt the screw counterclock wise as you put the cover back on. Put all the bolts in the cover and tighten them. Then back at the clutch adjuster, turn the screw outwards until it stops. Then turn it back inwards 1/4 turn, put the locknut and the spring in and replace the derby cover. Remove the top plug of the primary cover. Stick you finger in and feel the up and down play of the primary chain. Adjust the bolt at the bottom of the primary upwards to reduce the play to about 1/2" to 5/8" and lock the lock nut. Refill the primary with one quart of primary-transmision lube. Replace anything else you have taken off the bike.

good Luck

2003 harley davison superglide fxd questions concerning oil

The engine takes three quarts of oil with a filter change. Now, always check the oil after filling. The dipstick has two marks on it. The upper mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Do not overfill.

The transmission holds 20-24 ounces of transmission lube. It too has a dipstick on it.

The primary holds 36-42 ounces of oil. Do not overfill this either because too much oil will make your clutch seem like it's dragging. You will not be able to find neutral with the engine running.

Good luck

Need information on the changing of engine, primary and transmission oils on 2006 883L sportster

Your looking at 2.8qts for the engine add another 1/2 quart or so for the filter. Always put a little oil in and then add till full. Use the amounts identified as a guide to how much oil to have on hand. You primary may use 22 - 28 ounces, and your tranny a little less than a quart. so have at least 5 quarts available for a complete fluid change (and filter) and you should be good to go! Hope this helps.
