It's probably leaking internally at the slave cylinder.

No ... The primary has its own fluid system. U check the level by removing the derby cover with the bike level and filling the primary with chain case fluid til it comes to the bottom edge of the diaphragm spring. U can see it with a flashlight

SOURCE: Shake from left to right at high speeds.

Check for steering head bearing problems. But most likely you have a cruiser that is not supposed to be driven at high speeds and this is normal. Sport bikes use a steering dampner to solve that problem.

hey i had one of these myself until it got write off today, not very good when you hit the side of a van at 30mph lol.
I only got around 60 miles before i had 2 fill up just check the fuel system for air leaks coz a pipe came off mine and it just drank fuel also check the fuel to air mixture.

SOURCE: no fuel to carb, I think..

I would check the vacuum line that opens the fuel feed valve. It's located right under the fuel shutoff valv and is fed by the #2 carburetor.

if you take off the bar ends. fill the inner of the bars with silicone sealant. use a tube to get in. this is a cheap and light way of getting rid of vibration.make sure you refit bar ends before silicone cures. i use this method on my race bike, i used to get pins and needles. not any more.

What will the bike do if the transmission fluid is low?


Hi Anonymous, if it's only half full nothing. If it's empty but still wet probably some premature wear. I once did a service on a bike and got distracted, forgot to refill transmission, hey even the best of us make mistakes. The bike came back after several hundred miles for some chrome work which included the transmission top and side covers. To my horror the gears were black and the smell of burnt oil was obvious. I found no metal ants in the bottom of case, so I installed the new covers, filled the trans with parts cleaner and ran it through the gears for a couple of minutes. Drained the parts cleaner and repeated the process a few times untill the cleaner came out actually clean. Filled transmission with fresh clean trans oil and let it go. The next time he came in for service, which did not include a trans oil change, I changed it anyways just for GP and it looked good. The customer never came back with transmission problems. Harley Davidson engineers into it's engine and transmission cases small oil traps to keep some oil left in case of pump failure or distracted technicians. I once drove my own personal bike 28 miles with a sheared pump key and no oil pressure by running it up to 50 MPH pulling in the clutch and shutting the engine off and coasting. Harleys can take a ton of abuse if it's controlled. Good luck

I have a 98 HD softail with a 5 speed EVO. It seems to be having trans issues. It fill grab for a split second in 5th gear and 5th gear only. It will happen about every 5 to 10 seconds. I can feel it...


Well, I've have heard of this problem before but I've never seen it for myself. I wrote a opinion here just the other day concerning this problem in a 1990 bike.

This is unusual. I'm afraid that if your transmission is doing this, you are going to have to do at least a partial teardown of the transmission.

I could be that the shifter cam is not rotating fully to put the 5th gear clutch dog into gear. This would cause just the tips of the lugs to be driving the final drive gear. And, it could jump out and back in from time to time.

Now, why the shifter cam is not rotating fully is the question. If the rest of the gears seem to be shifting fine, I wouldn't think it was the shifter pawl but it could be.

If it were mine, I'd remove the exhaust system and whatever else needed to gain good access to the the transmission top cover. Remove the cover and raise the rear of the bike off the ground. Now, you can shift the transmission and watch the actions of the shifter cam. Pay particular attention to the 5th gear shifter fork. See how much "play" the fork has once it's shifted into gear. You may spot something wrong there and be able to repair the problem without pulling the transmission out of the frame. If not, you may have to pull the entire transmission or at least the trap doors with the shafts to inspect the final drive gear. You may wind up replacing the final drive gear if the clutch dog has been jumping in and out of gear.

One other thing. Have you checked your front belt pulley? I've seen the splines in the pulleys wear to the point that they just strip out and won't pull the bike in any gear. Check that before you start tearing down the transmission. Usually when this happens, (excessive wear on the front pulley) it is accompanied by a small transmission fluid leak. If you ride the bike and park it, it'll leak a spot about the size of silver dollar. If you wipe the spot up, it won't leak again until you either ride the bike again or start it up. Then, it'll leak again. The transmission fluid is leaking past the "quad seal" behind the pulley.

Once I forgot to put hypoid gear oil into my final drive and drove 30 miles to work before I realized the fill cap was not on. I filled it and capped it and it worked fine for years. That system only used about half a cup of hypoid. You may have put in too much oil and the excess is coming out the vent. You may have only popped the seal. If you damaged the rear end, it wont last long and , unfortunately, you may have to replace the assembly. Again I think it may just be overfilled. As for the vibration The quality of the dealer tells me that during the 600 mile check up they probably did not adjust your steering head bearings. if the steering head bearings are loose they can cause an assortment of hard to diagnose problems. Dig down under to the upper triple clamp and tighten the bearing a good snugging should be all it needs.You should be able to use the shock tool in the tool kit to turn the nut.

Change your oil more frequently if you ride the bike hard or especially if you ride the track like i do...i change my oil before and after a race!! and i"ve put 30k "extremely" hard miles on this engine and still performs well for a bike with 50k on the odometer! my bike is the very first 87 CBRF1 Hurricane.. i also have an 88 with only 16k on the odometer! Hondas are bullet proof, but the oil is the Key because everytime you miss-shift and grind a gear the same gear oil is used to lube the top half of the engine.

My 1990 z, manual trans, grinds some gears especially at high rpm. is it possible it may need trans fluid or is it a syncro problem? how do i check the trans fluid and how do i fill it?


the earlier model transmissions used syncros that wear out very quickly. you could try adding more fluid. jack the car up, on the passenger side of the transmission there is a half inch ratchet receptacle there is also one on the bottom for draining. undo the one on the side of the tranny and fill it with fluid until it starts to leak out the side. (only way to know when its full) then put plug back in.

i had the same problem on my 91z and it turned out to be the synchros. about 1000 to completely rebuild the transmission with new 4 and 5 gear. probably cheaper to just do the synchros. hope it helps and good luck...

ps u may need a breaker bar to get that side plug out.

Finished about a 300 mile ride was pulling into the garage and noticed that gear oil was pouring out the left side of the bike

Sounds like your gear box is wounded... actually, its possible excessive gear box oil is comming out the vent. Check the gearbox oil level before your next ride and check for leaks.

Dealer's usually tell you the amount you need if the bike is completely empty. Take a turkey baster and remove some oil, ride the bike and check the oil level again. I have seen to much oil blow the dip stick out and cover everything with oil and I have seen the oil tank split.

make sure your foot is not holding the gear selecter after changing into second while riding as this would not let the bike go any higher through the gears
