Question about 2000 Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Electra Glide Ultra Classic

1 Answer

While maintaining constant speed engine mis-fires through the air cleaner until you get into 3500 to max rpm. also after wipping the memory out then the engine went to 1400 rpm at idle giving it any throttle bogged it down.

My 1998 Jeep wrangler is idling high I replace IAC Valve and still high, cleaned the throttle good still high, and the engine light is on.

hot engine or cold or both,? and how high is high?
which engine.???? USA car, not the Export? 2.5 or 4.0L
why ignore that CEL lamp. the PCM is trying so hard to communicate to you, so plug any scan tool on earth in that port, 16pin USA OBD2 port. (USA car?)
scan it , and get the codes. DTCs.
The car has MAP based system , called speed density.
all pro machinics knows that phrase.
the reason is Map BASED EFI , all race fast with air leaks.
what happens is the air leak is detected (the brain is clueless as to where) and the brain matches perfect fueling to said total air.
bam you are an expert. easy huh?

air leaks 101 (its is complex in diagnosis but IS simple physics.)
  1. why not state what too high is 801 rpm 1000, 2000 RPM.
  2. The plenum vacuum at near 20 inches.?
  3. All vacuum hoses leak free, or worse missing or fell off
  4. did you pinch all vacuum lines to find the leaker (rpm drops)
  5. is the throttle cable set tight? it must not ever be so.
  6. is the Throttle valve full of gunk blocking is close up.?
  7. the key to finding this is blocking all air paths 1 by 1.
  8. The engine coolant never reaches and holds 180F + temp.
  9. The fast idle input to the PCM is true.
  10. Some one hacked the throttle stop(factory set?)
  11. see magic below:

the IAC motor never fails but does love to stick
cleaned my 3 jeeps like a 100 times. in 500k miles total.
its just a simple stepper motor.
keep in mind fast idle speed is a feature of the ECU.

magic,
to prove i have leaks , on my 4.0L
i removed the IAS stepper, motor. and unscrewed (causing closed
then put it back with no connnector. and started the engine.
it hot idle screams YOU HAVE AIR LEAKS.
acid test, no engine can run with zero air supply, that is my magic.
controlling ALL that air. what ever that takes.

more data here.fsm words.
The PCM is also equipped with a memory program that records the number of steps the IAC stepper motor most recently advanced to during a certain set of parameters. For example: The PCM was attempting to maintain a 1000 rpm target during a cold start-up cycle. The last recorded number of steps for that may have been 125. That value would be recorded in the memory cell so that the next time the PCM recognizes the identical conditions; the PCM recalls that 125 steps were required to maintain the target. This program allows for greater customer satisfaction due to greater control of engine idle.
Another function of the memory program, which occurs when the power steering switch (if equipped), or the A/C request circuit, requires that the IAC stepper motor control engine rpm, is the recording of the last targeted steps into the memory cell. The PCM can anticipate A/C compressor loads. This is accomplished by delaying compressor operation for approximately 0.5 seconds until the PCM moves the IAC stepper motor to the recorded steps that were loaded into the memory cell. Using this program helps eliminate idle-quality changes as loads change. Finally, the PCM incorporates a No-Load engine speed limiter of approximately 1800 - 2000 rpm, when it recognizes that the TPS is indicating an idle signal and IAC motor cannot maintain engine idle. A (factory adjusted) set screw is used to mechanically limit the position of the throttle body throttle plate. The IAC motor through the PCM controls all idle speed functions.

Engine revs up and down when airconditioning is on

The ac compressor takes around 5 hp to drive so when the clutch engages the idle speed will drop around 250rpm amd when the clutch dis-engages the rpm will rise 250 rpm If you have a efi computer controlled vehicle the computer should automatically adjust the rev difference to maintain a constant rpm. If you have a carby vehicle there is a electric over vacuum control that you can fit to the accelerator lever that when the clutch activates the power to the switch from the clutch opens a valve that allows vacuum to pull the throttle open and maintain a constant rpm

2005 harley ultra classic- excessive vibration between idle and 3500 rpm-also 2 second ignition mis fire.

Hi Anonymous, and the usual suspects are:
1. Wheels and or tires unbalanced, worn or damaged.
2. Eng ine/ transmission/vehicle not aligned properly.
3. Primary chain badly worn or links tight as a result of insufficient lubrication or misalignment.
4. Engine to transmission mounting bolts loose.
5. Upper engine mounting bracket loose.
6. Ignition timing incorrect/poorly tuned engine
7. Internal engine problem.
8. Broken frame
Good luck

2000 Yamaha V-Max Idles low then takes revs

Hi, Shaneharris5 you need to make sure you have no intake leaks by spraying some Brake Kleen, Contact Cleaner, Starting Fluid etc. around the intake manifold and seals, if the RPM's go up or down significantly then you have a leak that needs to be fixed before you can continue with the carburetor adjustment.
The engine should be at operating temperature with the enrichener off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the idle skrew clockwise to increase the idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease the idle speed. If you have access to your air fuel mixture skrew you may turn it as well, if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. Gently turn the air fuel mixture skrew clockwise until it starts to bottom out "STOP" do not over tighten as it will damage the taper on the end, now back the skrew out 1-1/2 full turns to establish a starting point start the engine and check the idle rpm's and turn the idle skrew accordingly for 950-1050 rpm if necessary, turn the air fuel mixture skrew 1/4 turn at a time and let the engine settle for about 10 seconds, turn the skrew clockwise for a leaner mixture and counterclockwise for a richer mixture, you are seeking the highest rpm your air fuel mixture skrew can acquire without going past 3 full turns from bottom then resetting the idle skrew back down to 950-1050 rpm If you can not detect any rpm change and can not stall the engine by turning the air-fuel mixture skrew all the way in then your pilot/low-speed jet is too big and needs to be replaced with the next size smaller. Final adjustment should be made with a clean air filter mounted to the carburetor.

Hello I have a 1980 Ford Bronco 351 2bbl. Wondering if anyone knows which screws adjust what? Please if anyone has any ideas please respond. Thank you.

Here are some images that might help to assist you, and let me know if you require any further assistance.

Adjust the curb idle with the engine warmed up and the choke off.

The air/fuel mixture screws should be adjusted with the engine warmed up and at normal idle speed, then turn each air/fuel mixture screw in one at a time until the engine just begins to mis-fire, then back the air/fuel mixture screw out 1-1/2 to 2 turns out a half a turn at a time until the engine idle is the smoothest. (your vehicle might have restrictor caps over the air/fuel mixture screws to limit the amount of adjustment)

Adjust the fast idle screw to the proper RPM with the engine cold and the choke on.

My Homelite CSP3314 chainsaw starts perfectly, and warms up. I am unable to rev the saw to full power as it cuts out. I have changed the old petrol & 2stroke with fresh but problem continues.

First thing you do is remove the air cleaner and do a test run to see if you reach max speed.

If you reach max speed... change the air cleaner.

If symptom is the same without the air cleaner there are either on or 2 screws on the carb.

If you only have one screw turn the screw about 1/8th turn CCW and try it again. Keep adjusting until you get max speed.

If you have 2 screws marked H & L then make the CCW adjustment 1/8th turn and retest speed. Adjust until max speed is reached.

NOTE: If speed actually decreases after making the adjustment. Reverse direction and turn it CW.

If all ajustments make no difference then the diaphram / float in the carb will need to be checked. the diaphram for holes and the float for proper operation / debris.

Lastly.... if there is an inline fuel filter check that also.

Reinstall air cleaner.

Thanks for using FixYa.

How to I set idle speed?

Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay. CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Drive ability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle.
IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE
NOTE: Idle mixture is controlled by Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Adjustment is not possible. After replacement of Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, system must be cycled as identified for PCM to properly control idle speed. If idle speed is not okay after cycling system, problem is usually caused by a dirty throttle plate or vacuum leaks. Ensure all vacuum components are functioning properly.

IDLE SPEED (4-CYLINDER)
Turn ignition on with engine off for 10 seconds. Turn ignition off for 10 seconds. Start engine and idle for 30 seconds. Slowly vary engine speed between idle and 3500 RPM 5 times. Return engine to idle. PCM will now properly control idle speed. 2.2L (Cavalier & Sunfire) & 2.4L (Alero, Cavalier, Grand Am & Sunfire)  Good luck and hope this helps. If it still has the high idle problem, your going to have to buy a can  if not two cans ot THROTTLE BODY CLEANER NOT CARBURATOR CLEANER. Just follow the instruction on the can and try to get the Idle Air Control Valve cleaned also which is on the sdie of the throttle body so go to town when cleaning the throttle body and then do the Idle speed relearn again. The other thing to is since your doing house cleaning, buy a MAF sensor cleaner and spray down your MAF sensor and IAT sensor also, this will help with your fuell consumption.

Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.

Engine starts, reaches high rpm, then slowly returns to a rough idle, misses badly,no backfire, surges as if searching/adjusting air/ fuel/est,timing light shows mark constantly changing/erratic,engine then...

Vacuum leaks. Check all hoses and intake bolts. Leaking EGR or plugged PCV valve. Air filter plugged. Leaking head gasket. Worn timing chain. Camshaft lobes worn. Valves burned or leaking. Fuel idle control system or sensor. Good luck!

My 2002 Ford Thunderbird is overheating. Have changed the thermostat but still overheats. My 2002 Thuderbird is overheating....had the Hydraulic Cooling Fan replaced 3 months ago.

You most likely have air in the system. These things can be a royal pain to get the air bleed out of the system.
Look back next to the brake booster and you will see a rubber tube with a screw cap in the end of it(this is the heater bleed), also on the front of the intake area you will see a black tube with an allen sloted cap.
Remove the slotted cap and screw the screw cc on the rubber tube. Add coolant to the coolant jug allowing the system to equalize until no more coolant can be added. Add as much coolant as possible to the engine fill( the sloted cap near intake). The heater air bleed will remain open.Replace the engine fill cap.Start the engine and turn the heater to MAX position.Close the heater air bleed when a steady stream of coolant comes from it, during engine idle. Allow the engine to idle for five minutes, add coolant to the degas bottle as needed to maintain the cold fill MAX mark.Reopen the heater air bleed to release any entrapped air and close again. Maintain engine speed of 2,000 rpm for 3-5 minutes or until hot air comes from the heater.Return to idle and verify hot air is still coming from the heater. Set the heater temperature setting to 75° F and allow the vehicle to idle for two minutes.Shut the engine off and allow to cool. After the engine has cooled, add coolant to the degas bottle to bring the level to the cold fill MAX mark. This should have the air out of the system.
