SOURCE: 96 xl883 speedo problem
Several possibilities. Your speed sensor may have picked up some metal from the trans. Remove it and wipe off the chips. Bad speedometer or intermittent bad connection or broken wire to the speedo.

If it's a mechanical and the odometer and trip meter are still running, the speedometer head is bad and the only thing you can do is replace it. There are places that "restore" speedometers but they are geared towards the restoration of speedometers for older bikes. It's very expensive to get one restored and you'll be better off to simply replace the speedo. There's no way to get inside the speedo and then reseal it when you're done on the late model units.

If the odometer is still working then the speedometer head has failed. You can check locally and see if anyone repairs the speedo's in this model. One such place to call is the nationwide speedometer repair firm of "Speedotach", if anyone can repair it they will be the ones.
