Loosen linkage fasteners, remove from shifter arm, loosen jam nut and unscrew the back ball joint.

SOURCE: loose shift linkage arm on the transmition end how do I get to it

Dude this is one of Harleys worst engenering feat. first do this/ take a long allen and loosen the bolt then retighten it. Sometimes this will work. If not my friend you have to take the inner Primary off just to remove that piece off the rod. If harley woild just give us a quater of an inch it would slip off. but they won't. So it takes a couple hrs (experienced) to change a 5 dollar part and 20 second fix. All the work is in removeing the primary. thats the only way their is no room between that shaft and the back of the inner primary... Like i said try the loosen and tighten trick first if your splines are to shot you have to go the hard route. Sorry hope this helps... I changed mine 3 months ago hahhah Plus I do it for a living.

How to replace the shift linkage in the pontiac montana van


On that van, like many other GM front-wheel-drive vehicles, the shift cable goes through a bracket on the transmission to the linkage( the little metal arm). Where the cable connects to the linkage, there is a ball stud. It takes quite a bit of force to disconnect the cable from that. If it became disconnected at that ball without any other outside influence, the shift cable may need to be replaced. You can try pushing the plastic end of the shift cable back on to that ball stud ,it should click into place.
If the ball stud became disconnected from the linkage(little metal arm), the linkage would need to be replaced.
There should be a locknut holding the linkage to the transmission stud right above the range selector switch. If it came loose of there, you may need a new linkage, and to replace that nut

1997 dodge ram wont shift


Ill bet your shifter arm ball joint assembly (a little ball joint that connects your stick to the shifter arm) is broken or nearly broken (loose)... junkyard aabout 25.00 and new about 300.00... take your pick. I am assuming that you have checked all of your fluids and you havent heard any really abvious grinding noises that would indicate that your trans is BAD and needs a rebuild.

Removing lower ball joint on nissan navara


Remove front wheel (axle stand under chassis).
Remove hub nut (32mm).
Disconnect steering track rod ball joint (leave nut on last few threads for protection 22mm then strike steering arm part of knuckle to shock pin free).
Remove brake caliper & disc. Hang caliper out of way. No need to disconnect brake hose.
Disconnect ABS sensor at top arm area and unclip from mount.
Loosen top ball joint nut. Strike part of knuckle where pin goes through to shock it free. leave nut on loose for now.
Undo lower ball joint pinch bolt & remove. This will probably be seized & will require plenty of penetrating oil & patience to get out.
Next the lower ball joint pin needs to come out of the knuckle so the knuckle can be taken off. You will probably have to beat a chisel into the split portion to open it slightly as the ball joint pin will be rusted in.
Now you have plenty of space to remove the ball joint from the lower arm. Jack vehicle & move stand to under lower arm just in enough to allow ball joint to be removed.
Remove circlip & hammer ball joint out. Use a suitable drift so as not to accidently miss & burr lower arm.
Now the part the perfectionists are not going to approve of.
Heat the hole in the arm gently with a torch (no need to get it glowing red hot but pretty hot!). You will know when its right by trying the old joint (you will be able to get it in position by hand easily without hammering). Now put the new ball joint in place & quickly & drench with cold water before any heat from the arm damages the new ball joint. Fit new circlip.
Reassemble everything in reverse.
There are other ways to do this job but I found this the most practicle for DIYer without special tools.

How do you put in a ball joint in a 2001 sebring convertible


It depends on exactly which ball joint of the 3 per side your changing, but here are the details.

COMPRESSION LOWER ARM & LATERAL LOWER ARM ASSEMBLIES
Removal
1. Loosen compression lower arm ball joint nut. Using steering linkage puller, separate ball joint and
knuckle. Remove nut, bolts and compression lower arm assembly. Remove dust cover.
2. Remove stay. Remove shock absorber lower mounting bolt. Loosen lateral lower arm ball
joint and knuckle nut. Using steering linkage puller, separate ball joint and knuckle. Remove nut, bolt and
lateral lower arm assembly. Remove dust cover.
Inspection
Using preload socket, ensure breakaway torque for compression lower arm ball joint is 4-22 INCH lbs. (0.5-2.5
N.m) for 2000 models. On 2001 models, breakaway torque is 22-54 INCH lbs. (2.5-6.1 N.m). Ensure
breakaway torque for compression lateral lower arm ball joint is 13 INCH lbs. (1.5 N.m). Check compression
lower arm, lateral lower arm, dust covers, and bushings for damage and wear.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW ball joint nuts. Lubricate lip and inside of dust cover with
multipurpose lubricant. Using installer, install dust cover. Check front wheel alignment.
UPPER ARM ASSEMBLY
Removal
Using steering linkage puller, loosen upper arm ball joint and knuckle nut. Remove self-locking nut. Remove upper arm and upper arm shaft assembly. Remove dust cover.
Inspection
Using preload socket, ensure breakaway torque for upper arm ball joint is 3-13 INCH lbs. (0.3-1.5 N.m).
Replace upper arm assembly when measured value exceeds specification. Check upper arm, dust cover, and
bushings for damage and wear.
Installation
1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW self-locking nuts. Lubricate lip and inside of dust cover
with multipurpose lubricant. Using Ball Joint Installer (MB990800), install dust cover.
2. Ensure upper arm shaft assembly is installed at indicated angle. Verify upper arm shaft
assembly installation. Check front wheel alignment.

Once you have the correct arm off and a replacement joint (if available, some are not serviceable and require the arm to be replaced) then you will need a press or a ball joint press to change the joint. Such as

the upper or lower ball joint is bolted into lower control arm or upper control arm
to remove from knuckle possibly has split pin to remove first before undoing nut. leave nut on ball joint (finger loose) but so you cant see any thread from shaft and use ball joint splitter to seperate or hit side of knucle with ball peine hammer to jolt tapper shaft of ball joint loose from knucle(dont hit to of ball joint shaft)then to remove nut you have to lift top arm & or knuckle to get between driveshaft

Windshield wipers stopped working on 1998 Nissan Sentra. Is it a fuse problem? If so, where is fuse box and which fuse? Is it a motor problem? is this an easy diy fix?


Water can enter and displace the grease in the wiper arm linkage ball joint where the wiper linkage attaches to the wiper motor linkage.

This can result in gradual wear over a period of time inside the joint that could lead to the separation of the wiper linkage assembly from the wiper motor linkage at the ball joint. A loss of windshield wiper function can result when this separation occurs.

To prevent grease from being washed out of the joint, the dealers will modify by adding a water diversion seal that will prevent water from entering the windshield wiper linkage ball joint area.

Shifter linkage came apart from transmission shift arm


I had the same problem and also linkage inside the car. I took ball joint apart and cleaned the surface then put silicone inside ball joint. Joined the two together then I put plastic tie wraps for wiring around the ball joints, two per ball joint. Let sit for 24 hours and it worked. It is probably temporary but it got me out of a $165 an hour repair job 500 miles from home. Hope this works for you as it tightens up the linkage and worked great. CW

Windshield wiper linkage ball joint white knuckle cap is broken


This is a DIY fix for a dollar. The white plastic caps that join the wiper arms together in the wiper assembly commonly wear and break under normal use. 1984 - 1986 Honda CRX and Civics also used these plastic caps for a short time - much to my dismay. In my 2000 Subaru Legacy and Subaru Forester (should work on 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 models as well), there is an easy DIY solution that will take care of the excessive play in the wiper travel, as well as the common 'wiper clunk'.
Head over to your local auto parts store an purchase a PCV Valve grommet for a Toyota. Part number 42058. These are only a dollar, and are normally stocked on the shelf. If you put the phrase 'pcv valve 42058' into to Google Image Search you will see what I mean. I’m attaching a picture as well.
For installation, gain access to the wiper assembly, I recommend removing the entire assembly (arms and motor) from below the black trim piece under the windshield. Inspect all the joints. If you have a loose joint, remove the white plastic cap and the arm from the ball joint. Slide the PCV Valve Grommet over the ball joint and press the arm into the grommet. This is now a perfect, snug fit. Wiper blades slamming into the car is a thing of the past.

2000 Expedition Right Ball Joint


you have to get a ball joint seperator, remove the retaing pin, and then the nut, put the seperator between the ball joint and the mount, use a hammer and hit the end of the seperator with the hammer, this will pop it loose, then take a large crow bar and push down on the control arm, this will free it from the arm... use a drill with a 1/2" bit to drill the rivets out of the top of the ball joint....

the new ball joint with come with nuts and bolts to bolt the new one down....

slide the ball joint back into the arm, and put the nut on and tighten as much as you can, then replace the retaining pin.....
