1.check your engine oil level. 2.check the silencer whether black smoke or blue smoke? in case black smoke, airfilter is blocked and improper air/fuel screw adjustment in carburetor. in case blue smoke, the oil burns inside the cylinder, check the valve clearance or the cylinder need to reboring or replacement along with piston....

Sounds like to much back pressure, pipes may be clogged from oil and need burnt out.

Check your air filter an then if that does not clear it up you may have a dirty inlet needle on the float a carb cleaning will go a long way I would say dirty needle if it does not fix look at coils weak coils can cause plug fouling but not that often

Spark plugs carboning up

Very critical, if the plug is the wrong reach and hotter or colder than specified the bike's performance will be affected. I would suggest getting an iridium plug of the correct heat range for your Harley D. Your user manual or local stockist will tell you the normal plug to use for your bike. The manual will if applicable list plugs of different heat ranges to cater for engine mods etc. A point to take note of: - plugs by different manufacturers are specific to themselves. No 2 brands of plug are the same. Similar they maybe but not identical, and this is where you can go wrong. Also you cannot mix plug brands or types. Hope this helps

check that the egr valve is not stuck open remove it and cover the hole on the intake side and see if it goes away or with engine running remove the vac line from the valve and install a short length of hose and suck on the hose to draw a vac on the valve it only takes 3-5 inches of vac to open it the engine should stall or run even worse if it is not stuck and if it was stuck open you didnt change anything

, black carbon deposit on spark plugs starts spitting and coughing

You didn't say what year or model bike you have or whether it's fuel injected or carburetor equipped. If it's equipped with a carburetor this condition is usually caused by warming the engine too long with the enricher on. The enricher provides a very rich mixture to start the engine with. I've seen people start their bikes and let them run for ten minutes with the enricher on. They foul a lot of plugs to. Use the enricher to start the bike but as quickly as you can get the bike to run without it, turn it off and use the throttle grip to keep the engine running until it will idle by itself. I use the throttle lock underneath the throttle housing.

Your plug is telling you the answer here. Look at this chart.
i have seen engine produce the dry, black soot deposit on plugs when the timing is just a little off. Run some Seafoam thru your fuel system and it will clean the carb, the carbon, the valves...everything.

81 yamaha xj 650 spark plugs fire when engine isn't running

If you are saying the bike still continues to want to run, (rough running I am sure ), after the key is shut off then the engine is "dieseling". Carbon buildup on the piston / valves/ cylinder head is getting red hot from running. The hot spot(s) serve to ignite the fuel much the same as the spark plugs would. Burn only premium gas, be sure the cylinder is clean and not caked with mud or such, and change to a colder spark plug like NGK BP-8es or BP-9es ( BP-7es is the stock plug ). This may keep the engine cooler and stop the problem. The only other way is to pull the head then de-carbon it and the pistons. While the head is off, re-seat the valves using valve grinding compound. Check out Babbitts for parts. Go to Please rate my answer.

Wont start has spark , new fuel, new oil.

Is the spark plug black?
It won't run well with a carbonized plug.

Is the main jet in the carb plugged?
If the plug is dry after trying to start it.....your fuel is not getting into the engine and most likely a plugged carb jet..
Also.....Is the fuel switch it in run position?

If the generator has sat for a while with fuel left in the carb/fuel tank.......the most common problem is a plugged varnished dirty carburetor in need of a good cleaning.
Always shut the fuel off and let the carb run dry (run until the engine stops)before storing.
Add fuel stabilizer to any remaining fuel or drain the tank before storing.

Really black spark plug on 2002 wr426 irregular spark and runs fine when new plug in engine . only getting 5hrs use to a plug. running far too rich maybe any ideas ?

If this bike has a two cycle engine and auto lube or auto mix you might need to have the oil to gas mixture adjusted by a good motorcycle shop. It is not a very expensive adjustment, and running to much oil can carbon up the rings which can damage the cylinder wall.

Noise from engine

A gearbox problem is possible but not likely. You are probably hearing pre-ignition aka; engine knock and detonation. Hot carbon deposits on the piston and head are igniting the gas before the spark plug does. Use premium gas instead of regular. Change gearbox oil (10w40). Get a new spark plug one heat range colder than the stock plug for your bike. Chances are the problem will go away once you are using premium gas and have the new plug.

Please rate this solution. Thanks Rashid!
