Dean ,carb cleaner can be used to clean the carb parts on a re build and thats all .if the bike sat over winter (with fuel in the tank ?) how does it smell ? if its bad it will smell like turpentine .and needs to be changed ,theirs a lot of questions here . was the batt in good shape from the winter ,(good charge 12.6 ?) was your choke on when you dumped the cleaner in tryin to start ?

Backfire exhaust

Hi Anonymous, flames are a prime indicator of retarded timing which means you probably have an electrical component going south. But which one is the million dollar question. Not quite sure about the carb cleaner in the fuel tank, like what effect does carb cleaner have on sensors? my gut says not good but I could be wrong. That being said you need to do some on board diagnostics. go to http://www.fuelmotousa.com/harleycodes.html and they will walk you through it. Good luck

I have a 2001 yamaha yz426f that backfires after start and shoots flame from exaust and the exaust gets so hot it glows red.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.

Deceleration popping on a fuel injected bike

Hi Anonymous, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module can be caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck

WHAT MAKES A BIKE BACKFIRE

Backfires are usually caused by an ignition timing problem. The spark comes when the intake or exhaust valve is open this caiuses the ignited fuel to burn in the carb or the exhaust pipe.

Aftermarket pipes tend to lower back pressure, this will cause the fuel/air mix to lean out and result in the "popping" you hear---Backfiring, is extremely rare these days with electronic ignitions and the high reliability of engines. Real backfiring means the engine is not properly timed and the fuel/air mix is getting a spark and ignition at the wrong time (when the intake valve is open). Real backfiring is actually the bike "spitting up" in a sense, backwards through the carburetor or intake. You can check for exhaust leaks up around the cylinder heads by putting on some gloves and covering the exhaust tips momentarily. I have seen exhaust leaks that will make the popping worse by allowing air to be sucked in during deceleration...Hope this helps.

I would suggest not making any changes until you find out the problem. especially if the bike was running ok prior. Was the bike sitting for the winter? did you use any fuel stabilizer? Change fuel including draining carbs. Check your air intake passages for spider webs, any mouse nests,... check air filter. change your spark plugs , especially if they look black. The condition of the old spark plugs will tell you a lot. Black indicates running too rich. Whitish or next to nothing indicates too lean fuel mixture. Tanish color is perfect. Start with the simple fixes before dropping money into her

Exhaust leaks near the exhaust port can draw air into pipe on deceleration and detonate any unburnt fuel leaving engine, causing backfire and high temps.
An overly lean fuel mixture on the engine can make decel backfire worse too.

two things you have to oberved. Choke is only applicable if you experience hard starting in the morning,If yes then use choke for a while till you got your motor idling stage.the glowing red hot indicates that your engine is flaming hot, this means your choke is steadily on.( never stay your choke steadily on.).Try to clean your carb , carb cleaner will do. even without dismantling your carb from the engine manifold.Rev your throttle and spray through the air intake, you'll notice a foul sound bcoz the cleaner is mixing with your gas,it's fine.also you'll notice a black smoke while doing a full rev. it's also fine , thats the carbon that need to push out from your carb. take it from there my friend ...let me know the result.observed your bike

no your totally wrong the backfire is bcause if u juice the throttle there is excess fule in the cylinders witch give it no where to go so it ignights and creates a backfire witch is not necessarly bad.
