Is it the carbs with diaphrams on top ? check they seated correctly ! if slide type then renove filter and get a rag to block slightly the cyl thats off as you run engine and see if it starts to fire , if yes then see if it runs without rag acting as a choker ! if not then clean and rebalance the 4 carbs so they open at same time !

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a few possibilities you may want to check/explore:

  • stale gasoline;
  • clogged fuel filter (inside the tank above the fuel shutoff valve;
  • clogged, bocked, varnished, gummed carbs, jets, air pin holes;
  • stuffed air filter/box;
  • vacuum leak (rubber coupling, manifold side);
  • air leak (airbox base assembly seated/fitted on the carbs.
Basically, a general cleanup of the fuel lines, tank and the carbs. Sitting for some time tends to leave varnish like coating on most parts.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

SOURCE: 1979 suski 750,bike runs on 2 left side cylinders,

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

With the indulgence of craigjamesbt...

A few additional ideas to consider:

  • it would be an electrical/ignition issue if 1 & 4 or 2 & 3 will not fire but not 3 & 4;
  • almost always, raw fuel on exhaust indicates a flooded engine. A flooded engine would most likely be a carb issue;
  • best way to determine if it is an engine concern is to do a compression test;
  • a way to test the right carb pair is to deliberately starve them of fuel by temporarily plugging/blocking the inlet port/seat with rubber similar in appearance as to those used for glue gun, not installing the needle and float. Assemble the carb and install. Start the bike and use/spray carb cleaner on the right side carb. Note if 3 & 4 will fire even intermittently.
Would appreciate a postback on results/updates on any developments.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Take the carburetors apart and either rebuild them or clean them thoroughly.

SOURCE: Rebuilt carbs. flooding rear cylinder

My bike started doing the same thing. I pulled the carbs put new kits in them and it still does the same thing. It does not seem like a spark issue because the fuel consumption would not be this bad, but the floats looked good. The needle valves and seats are new. I am not sure what to think at this point. I even replaced the intake manifolds and flushed my fuel system. It starts good initially. It is almost like the fuel pump is pushing to much pressure and over coming the needle valve. Has anyone seen this before?
Thanks,

Hi, David and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

Replaced fuel line ,rebuilt carb replaced spark plug

Is there gas in the tank? Sorry, but sometimes simple things escape us.

Also... is your fuel old? Does it maybe have a lot of water in it? Before you do anything else, try again with a full tank of fresh gasoline. THEN try the rest of this if it still won't stay running.

The problem you describe is VERY indicative of a fuel problem - no fuel getting to the carburetor, or not enough fuel getting into the cylinder from the carburetor. Try pulling the fuel line off the carburetor to see if fuel comes out quickly. If not, there's an obstruction in your tank.

If plenty of fuel comes out quickly, then the problem is in that rebuilt carburetor; sometimes a rebuilt one comes back misadjusted or incorrectly reassembled.

1982 Suzuki Gs 550 L will not start when hot

Hi, Zach and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. The fuel tank has old dead gas.
3. Fuel tank bottom contaminated with ethanol sludge, dirt, water, rust, etc.
4. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
5. Fouled spark plugs.
6. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enrichner.
7. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
8. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
9. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched, kinked or blocked.
10. Carburetor float stuck.
11. Fuel injectors clogged.
12. Fuel injectors stuck open.
13. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a cursory reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
14. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
15. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil or plug between ignition sensor and ECM module.
16. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting check for spark leakage in the dark, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
17. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or MAP, CMP, CKP, O2, TPS, ETP, IAC sensors.
18. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
19. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
20. A stuck bent or burnt valve.
21. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
22. Security system not disarming alarm needs a reset.
23. Check for engine trouble codes.

I did a Suzuki 550 carburetor over haul 10 years ago and had 3 of the 4 intake manifolds crack or separate. I would start by closely inspecting the manifolds. Have you tried draining a carburetor bowl to see if it is full of gas? If the vacuum line to the fuel petcock is not hooked up correctly you could just have fuel starvation. You can hold a spark plug to a cylinder head and turn the motor over to see if you have spark. Correct amount of fuel, correct amount of air, and spark is what you need.
I just gave that answer to some one else. The fact is I had to remove and clean my carbs 4 times . Each time I did it, I got one more carb to idle. The last carb to work for me was the vacuum nipple carb. By the time I was done I had to replace all four manifolds they had all separated or cracked. To get my carburetors working I turned them upside down and shot through them with carburetor cleaner in the morning before work and in the evening after work. The reason it wont idle is the carburetor passageways are still plugged in the slow circuit. Carburetor cleaner , air pressure, and in my case time to get the blockage out of the bodies. When I was done it ran great.

The slow jets and adjoining passageways are still dirty. As painful as it may be , take the carbs off and clean the slow circuit again or it will never idle. Double check the fuel pump is working properly and the fuel filter is not plugged. One time it took me four cleanings to get all four carbs working on a Suzuki that sat for five years. Also make sure none of the carburetor boots have developed rips from age.

The neutral safety switch is out of adjustment. Most bike won't start unless it is in Neutral or the clutch lever pulled in. Get a new battery and charge it up full. The intake boots need to be replaced or it will run lean. That is why you need to chock it to get it to run.
