Question about 1981 Yamaha Sr250 Sr 250 Exciter Y213 Air Box

1 Answer

I just got a 1981 yamaha sr 250 and the idle runs high i have lowered the ajustment screw but after a bit it runs high and then drops and stalls

The carb appears to be clean inside.... also it has very low compression. would this cause this problem?

Hi Tony,
It sounds to me like your diaphragm in the carb has a hole in it. take the cover off the top of the carb and lift the diaphragm, slide and needle out of the carb. Hold it up to a light and if you see any light through the diaphragm you will need to replace it. Remove the needle and fit it into the new slide which comes with the new diaphragm.
Don't waste your time trying to fix the old diaphragm. I have tried every trick in the book and i can assure you that in the end you will have to get a new one. This is not a cheap part, but it will be your only solution.
As for the compression problem, it could be valves or rings. Take a compression test and then squirt a little bit of sae 40 into the spark plug hole and then take another compression reading. If the compression improves after adding the oil it means that your rings need replacing. if it makes no difference, then it will probably be a valve problem.
good luck
Brian

I have never heard of a carb icing up. but if it for any reason did, that might cause the diaphragm to crack

may have a lacquered over carb causing the ports not to work properly. take apart and clean thoroughly then blow out all orifices with compressed air.
