Question about 2000 Yamaha YZF-R1

Weak spark I have weak spark on coil that sparks 1 and 4 how ever i have tested borth coils they are fine Spark plugs are fine tested the volts behind coils on the elctrical wire and they are the same however the spark is still very wekak on 1 and 4 what could the problem be

If you have an ohm meter, check the resistance on coil 1 and 4 - across the positive and negative wires and compare that to the coil that feeds 2 and 3. If the resistance is higher on coil 1 and 4 that would cause a week spark and i would suggest changing it. If you don't have a meter, simply connect coil 2 and 3 to the wiring of coil 1 and 4 and turn the bike over and check the spark. if it is a stronger, then your 1 and 4 coil is the problem and will need replacing. Prior to checking all this, make sure that the earth contacts on your coil to bike frame are good and are clean and free of corrosion and the like. Hope this helps

    I have done the check with coil that sparks 2 and 3 to the place of 1 and 4 the it gives me a weak spark aswell I am not sure how to check the earth on the coils as the coil that works has a red wire and a grey wire and the coil with the weak spark has orange wire and red wire bothe coils are mounthed on a plastic frame it does not come close to a earth

Get a BRAND NEW plug and recheck for spark. Be sure plug is grounded to engine. By the way, FTjoe (above) has some very good questions. The sator is not involved here. The dealer can check the CDI usually for free.

yes buddy the only way to test the cdi is too put on another bike and if it was the stator it wouldnt spark and yes you are on the right tracks but maybe it could be the plug does it run brilliantly

May be CDI, but check all your grounds first. Make sure you have a clean metal to metal connection of the coil to frame. Disconnect the leads going to the kill switch also. you may have a high resistance to ground short. Also, did you replace the lead coming out of the coil going into the spark plug? did you reuse the old lead?

Hi, Richard and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting/leaking, spark plug cable connections loose check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil or electronic control module.
7. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.

Weak fire on pocket bike
Hi, I do a lot with these bikes, I think if you are getting a weak spark there is a couple things to check. First, do you understand how it builds the power to create the spark? The magnet in the flywheel has to be very close to the magnito or coil, if the gap is too much it will cause a weak spark, if the magnet is weak, weak spark, if the coil is shorting internally, weak spark. If the plug wire is damaged, weak spark. I hope this helps you.

My Yamaha XT 500 has a weak spark and wont start -If I use a BP8ES plug ther is some spark With a BP7ES nothing

1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and CDI box.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose, check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil, pick up coil, trigger coil or CDI box testing needs to be checked with an ohmmeter at 70 degrees Fahrenheit
7. Faulty safety switches clutch, kickstand, neutral, off/on etc.
8. Faulty ignition switch.

1990 30 HP mariner #689L532392, has weak spark on plugs, (ignition coil is new)
if the ht leads to the plugs is separate to the coil/s replace the leads
they are carbon cored and fail with super high resistance causing weak spark

97 pontiac firebird 5.7L HAS NO spark from optispark but has spark from coil
This engine uses a special flat cap and a standard rotor, right ? The spark comes into the cap and thru the rotor, then to the spark plugs.
Have you replaced the rotor ?
The spark can jump thru the rotor and ground thru the dist. shaft.
Depending on where you are testing for spark, the coil could also be weak and not pushing the spark to the plugs.

The car is a 1999 plymouth neon the spark coming out of the plug is weak and yellow engine will turn over but wont start it is getting enough fuel and replaced the plugs
check the spark output at the coil. If there is still weak spark than make sure there is 12 volts to the coil. If there is than the coil is probably bad.

Also make sure the engine is turning over properly. If the battery is low or the starter is drawing to many amps than there may not be enough power left over to deliver enough spark from the coil.

It has all the symptoms of an electronic failure. I would suspect the pickup coil in the engine , coil or trigger box. You can check the pulse coil,
AC volt scale, something a little less than 1 volt when you turn the engine over. Two wires from the engine, don't have a diagram for your bike handy , sorry. Pulse coil triggers the ignition box that fires across the primary of the coil. Check spark plug cable and where it enters coil and cap for corrosion first. Next time it quits, have a spare good plug with you, insert the plug into a plug wire you've removed and be sure the plug is grounded then try to start the bike and see if it has a nice blue spark. If it's yellow or red, weak spark meaning something in ignition circuit failing. You can test coils with resistance VOM meter if you can find the specs. Good luck!
