2005 heritage will not idle after it warms up

Bike will start run good, once warmed up it will not idle without a little throttle?

SOURCE: Clutch slipping while cold, when warm/hot, it operates great.

I have a 2000 Vulcan Nomad FI & had a very similar problem. In fact, it's a very common problem with these bikes. I fixed it by replacing the Clutch Spring. (As Described here: http://www.gadgetjq.com/clutch_spring_replacement.htm

It cost me $40 and 3 hours of time with an impact wrench.

I would suggest that you have the valve clearances checked.

Also, check that the carb is clean. Pay particular attention to the PILOT JET as this opperates the idle circuit.

Here's the deal. I have never even heard of your bike brand but I have 18 years in bike repair. If you promise not to give me anything less than a "helpful" rating I will tell you how to do the fix based on the assumption that the bike has a standard carb and not a CV carb. The standard carb has a top "cap" that unscrews from the center of the carb body.

ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand when working on carburetors.
Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side or bottom of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine. Now unscrew the top cap and pull the slide out of the throat of the carb. When you re-install the slide, be sure the long notch on the side of the slide lines up with the small pin inside the throat of the carb.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Before putting the slide back in the throat of the carb, move the clip on the jet needle one notch lower. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

You need to fix the fueling first - without fuel it won't run!
Your other problem sounds like an air leak - either the manifold or the carb. Check by spraying WD-40 or CRC at the manifold and carb join while the bike is running - if the revs change (either up or down) you have a leak.

It sounds like your bike has been sitting in storage for an extended period of time (a year or more) - and the carburetors are plugged up. If this is the case, they will need to be completely disassembled and cleaned out.
If it hasn't been sitting (and the carbs aren't plugged up) then check that all of the normal tune-up items have been performed, especially valve adjustment, oil and filters, spark plugs, etc. If this fails to produce positive results, perform a compression check on the engine. Each cylinder must be able to produce at least 140 psi of compression in order to run and idle properly.

Check for leak's on manifold rubber between cylinders!
Try to squirt a Carbu cleaner inside the manifold when running,if the idle going fast or dropped, then you have a leak,.

Start the bike and let it idle in neutral. Keep it idling for at least 8-10 minutes so the bike is good and warmed up. Once the bike is warmed up adjust the carburetor screw in or out little bits at a time until the bike idles at approx. 1800 RPM! Easy fix. Good luck!

You're running the bike too long with the "choke" or enricher on. Five minutes is way too long. The enricher circuit is very rich and it will foul your plugs if you allow it to run too long. Use the enricher to start the engine and keep it running just until you can keep the engine running with the throttle grip. Then, use the throttle tension knob beneath the throttle grip to lock the throttle to a high idle until the engine warms up.

I have a 2005 harley davidson sportster xl 1200 custom. after bike is at normal operating temp.when i stop for redlight or stop sign, bike idles to fast.i can let out on clutch little bit and it will slow...


If the carb is adjusted correctly, the engine will not idle without the choke when cold. I will usually take at least 3 to 5 miles of riding to get the engine warm enough to idle by itself without the choke. If your bike is a full operating temperature, it should idle at about 1000 RPM. If it's idling higher than this, you need to slow it down a bit.

Remove the air filter cover and look at the top right side of the carb. You'll see a screw there . This is the throttle stop screw. Turn the screw counterclockwise to lower the idle speed to 1000 RPM or so. Blip the throttle and let it settle back to idle. Reset it if necessary. Once set, put the air cleaner cover hand on.

These bikes need the carbs ajdusted rather frequently, once they get out of adjustment the they juste don'e idle good. Also as old as this one is I can guess that you may have some air leaking around your some of the gaskets and this is why after it warms up it runs better, the gaskets get heated and the swell a little and then start sealing better. It would do you good this winter if you replaced all your intake and carb gaskets and get the carbs adjusted by a trained technicianan you will be ready to roll when summer comes around.

turn the cable adjuster back to its original position ie between 600-700 rpm look to the left hand side of the carbs you will see a large adjusting screw on a metal bracket whilst engine is running turn inwards towards rear wheel until between 1000 - 1500 rpm remember to warm engine first as rpm will rise if idle is set with a cold engine as the engine warms up when riding

Need to know then factory settings for the carburetor on a 78 it 250 e...how many turns out for the idle and how many turns out for the air/fuel mix?


I have the H model and set mine at one and a half turns out from stop. It waivers a little from summer to winter but only by a fraction.

As for the idle speed, when bike is warmed it will idle a little different to when cold and using choke.

Personal preference really, without a tacho fitted, I set it so she idles easy when cold. Once she's warm, idling is generally not used!!

To balance the two, warm engine and hold throttle at your optimum idle speed. Screw in idle adjuster until it engages base edge of carby slide. Release throttle and screw in/out fractionally to test if revs rise/fall. Set at optimum and then turn air mixture screw in/out till revs are highest (without using throttle). Then reset Idle screw back out to bring revs down to optimum level.

Tip, use a little thread seal on the idle screw as they have a nasty habit of unscrewing and leaving a hole in the side of your carby...sure fire way to lean right out and burn a hole in your piston when riding.
